Hi all , I had a small lotto win this last saturday yippe !! :rofl:I wont be retiring soon tho as the optimum word is SMALL , but I did get to order a new Long Perng 90mm f5.5 APO:D today from Andrews Com. and it will be here in about a week .
For $849 delivered these have to be a major bargain ?
They only have 4 of these so if you want one you had better be quick .
With the fpl53 doublet lense , 500mm f/l and 11 to 1 focuser it will be a great imaging scope .
An Atik 314c CCD is to follow , here I go down the" road to empty pockets" , but what the hey?? :hi:.
I cant wait as Luke said the build is very good , on par with WO scopes , and I have no reason to doubt his word as every item I have ever got from Andrews has been top notch .
I will post photos when it arrives and is all set up .
Now the dreaded WAIT !!!
More to follow......
Brian.

;) My God ! the internet is s l o w here tonight , blardy frustrating ....
Anyway thanks guys , I am like Flash on the waiting train , looks like your beautiful TV and my LP will arrive about the same time there Flash?
Yes I will definatly keep all informed , I will do a review here on IIS as there is nothing on the net that I can find on these , any one else had any luck ?
I see these scopes as becoming a new ED80 , especially for imaging as I have said , what do you recon?. The first comparo will be with my excellent Saxon ED80 , that will be a good start . 10mm extra is a lot at this size scopes .
Any way the wait continues .......

Its definatly a buyers market out there at the moment ;).

;) Ha ! Bo , ya gott love a trier ? I was out last night looking at Mars with my Zeiss , using the 4, 5 , and 6mm LV's @ 210x to 140x and the detail was impressive , really nice eyepieces , well made and petite . Nice to hold and use . But hey ......

 I hear you GB , the LP 126mm and 152 mm are going to do it hard ,Dollar wise , when against the North Bridge 127's and Synta's 120's and 150 's .
They might be worth the extra $$'s but they will have to be really good ,because at these prices you can get a TV ,TEC, TBM or even a 2nd hand AP ? and in the 127mm size to top my NG127 triplet , its got to be a special scope at 1/2 the price .of these new large APO's comming on .
I will not be able to stop my self from calling from the towers when my new 90mm F/5 arrives :D, even though it's only ? ? a doublet , but it uses FPL53 .. Yea Ha .
The new ED80 . in 90mm . ;) .

 the LP is here , nice build ., well worth the money .
I cant take any decent photos because when I get home at 6.30pm its a little dingey ( dark) , ;). and the lovely gloss black finish dont show up very well in a flash .
The 11 to 1 focuser is very smooth , not as good as my supercharged GSO 10 to1 on my ED80, and I wont mention the FT3035 at this time .
but it aint bad , in the same league as my GSO b4 it got worked on.
Optics ,,, ?? well , the weather up here is bad , cyclones every where , so its very cloudy .
I took the 90mm f/5 and my sweet ED80 f/7.5 out on to the deck last night and using my 13mm Nagler in the 90mm and my 17mm Nagler in my Ed80 on a street light 1/2 a Km up the street ;). ....
.....
I was under whelmed wth the 90mm LP .. more colour than my old SV Aplanat ???? , the Ed80 blew it away . F/7.5 against F/5.5 , but still the LP was not doing it !! World class eyepieces , so the problem was not there.?:help:
Here I was asking for a comparo with Flashes up and comming TV85 and Morton's SV80mm , ,,, I was ready to hide under a rock ... Sorry guy's .:confused2:.
Then it hit me , I had just done the oppisite to most people do , and thats take a scope from a cool air conditioned house at 24 degrees into the NT's hot and humid 33 degrees , and the poor 90mm lense had to acclimatise to the heat , Woaw !! :eyepop:, After 1/2 an hour , the 3 way comparisim was back on ,, Nice views , as sharp and perfectly colour free as my ED80 ,, but so much brighter . 10mm is a lot .
, I am impressed .
Photos comming .:hi:

I suspect this is the same scope as the Megrez 88 f/5.6, but a couple hundred cheaper - it would be interesting to have them side by side to see if the view is the same.

05-04-2012, 10:45 AM
Tony it would seem like that, i wonder why WO thought decreasing aperture from 90 to 88 would make much diff esp when they have the M90. i would have thought a triplet 85 would have made more marketing sense
casstony
05-04-2012, 11:37 AM
Daniel, there might be a difference in the clear aperture or not - the Stellarvue 105 triplet has the same lense cell as the Sharpstar 106 and APM 107, and now the Sharpstar 106 has been replaced by a Sharpstar 107 - marketing funny buggers.

:question:You may be right there Tony as Luke at Andrews mentioned something similar when I brought this one .
The optics in mine are first rate ,and at 200x give a perfect aeiry disc with one faint ring , and the in and out of focus are very similar , just a little spherical aperation seen at the 200x on the outer ring , very , very small and I aint bothered by this .
The moon last night was totaly colour free and when it was just out of the field of view of my 22mm Pan the light scatter was very well supressed , also the sky was black around the moon so the baffeling is of a good design and well exicuted ..
All in all for $850 delivered its a great scope , sexy and very well made , small enough to be carry on luggage .
Oh yes one more thing the focuser is very good out of the box , a seldom seen thing on todays mass produced chinese scopes .. :)
I am extremely happy with it .

Scope never came with a ' vixen ' style dovetail bar to suit the TeleVue Clam-Shell ... Rang Bintel ... sending me one next week.
Have it mounted on a ' heavy duty ' Tripod ... no slow motion controls ... have to keep ' nudging ' it to keep ' target ' in eyepiece view..... just a bit irritating to say the least.

hi Brian, I had a Megrez 88 out a couple nights ago - don't know what glass it has but there was negligible CA in focus with green on one side and magenta on the other. focus was touchy but I didn't have the benefit of low gear - need to pull the focus shaft apart for adjustment. views seemed quite sharp with no obvious aberrations, eg. Decentering, astigmatism. haven't measured the objective but I'm away from home ATM. could only go to 100X but light and dark features were visible on mars
.
brian nordstrom
15-04-2012, 11:45 AM
:) Thanks Tony for that , there must be a differance as mine easily holds 200x plus and is almost totally colour free , as you say there are no other abberations seen at high powers while doing a star test (5mm lanthium and ultima 2x barlow ) exactly 200x .
Not bad at all considering its working at f/5.5 ..

Hi everyone-I'm new on this site.
Have just purchased Long Perng 90mm, and am reasonably happy with it. I haven't done a lot with it as yet, but bright deep sky stuff is impressive-but I have a feeling it is a bit soft on planetary observing. I'll reserve judgement until I have used it under better conditions.
Luke at Andrews was unsure of the glass used, so I contacted the factory, and they say it is FPL51. Colour correction seems pretty good though
casstony
04-05-2012, 04:16 PM
Hi Laurie, thanks for the info and welcome to IIS. It probably is the same scope as the Megrez 88 but they've squeezed a couple of extra mm's out of the objective - nice little visual scope in any case.
Tony

Hi Tony-just had email from Long Perng confirming LP90 mm and Megrez 88 mm use the same lens
casstony
07-05-2012, 11:58 PM
It's interesting that LP will provide info about glass types; WO is more coy about the objectives in their scopes. The Megrezz 88 wasn't available for very long so I'm curious to see if the repackaged LP is more popular.
I just tuned up the focuser on the used Megrez 88 I bought - pulled it apart to find out why the dual speed wasn't working and it turned out I only needed to tighten a grub screw - works like a new one now.
Larryp
08-05-2012, 09:58 AM
Hi Tony-have you tried planetary observing with your Megrez? I have not had good enough seeing conditions as yet, to really evaluate the LP, but I just have a feeling it is not quite there for this purpose. I will wait for better conditions to be sure. Could not see any features on Mars, but seeing terrible, and Saturn looked better, but could barely make out Cassini division. Lunar views are tack-sharp, even at 200x
Larryp
08-05-2012, 10:06 AM
Long Perng seem very open about their designs. I called the factory to find out about the glass used, and the lady I spoke to took my email and said I would hear from them. Shortly after I received email with an attachment from their catalogue showing the specifications for their 80mm and 90mm scopes. I replied to the email asking if this lens was the same as Megrez 88mm, and received a confirmation that it is indeed the same lens. I anyone would like to see the catalogue page, please supply an email address and I will forward it.
casstony
08-05-2012, 10:36 AM
I've only had one chance to look at Mars and that was at 100x in poor conditions - light and dark areas were still visible, though not as obvious as in an 8" SCT I had out at the same time. That's to be expected though; I find a larger scope almost always shows a better image regardless of the conditions, with better contrast and colour saturation.
When testing a scope I prefer to have another out at the same time to compare the views - avoids being tricked by not taking into account one variable or another.
Larryp
08-05-2012, 11:30 AM
Thanks for the advice Tony. I used to have a Televue Pronto years ago, while I was waiting on delivery of AP 6" Starfire. Pronto was amazing-could use 200x on Mars and clearly see polar cap and surface markings, and I guess I am remembering that when evaluating the LP.
casstony
08-05-2012, 12:47 PM
Thanks for the catalogue Laurie. That's the first time I've seen a manufacturer supply details of the glass types used. It's interesting that the LP 80 to 100mm (and megrez 88) doublets all use the same glass type for the mating element (NBM51) and it's not a cheap glass, it's price being in the same range as FPL51.

Hi all!
I have been looking for glass info about the LP 100 F/6 doublet. Some places on the web lists it as FPL-51 and others as FPL-53. Was that in the details supplied by LP?
BR
/Per Johansson
casstony
17-05-2012, 08:13 AM
Hi Per, the LP 100 f/6 doublet uses FPL51 + NBM51, so it should have similar performance to the 90 f/5.5, nice visually but not ideal for imaging. Welcome to IIS :)
Per Johansson
17-05-2012, 08:21 PM
Thanks! It seems logical that the 100 should use the same glass as the 90 as it is not much more in price.
I have seen reports that the 100 has visually similiar ca correction as the Skywatcher ed 80 so I guess it is the mating glass that makes it so good. I have also seen a startest were it looks like the megrez 88 and 72 show less ca than the United optics/Kunming 102 F7 (Astro prof/Starwave/Ikharus/Orion) and 70 F6 (TS):
http://www.teleskop-austria.at/information/Vega_testphotos_apochromats.jpg
I want it both for visual and photo. The few images I have seen have been through mono cameras with rgb filters so the CA will not show.
Larryp
18-05-2012, 12:09 PM
Hi Tony-I said before I wasn't sure about my LP90. Finally determined the lens wasn't as good as it should be, and exchanged the scope. New one is excellent-great star images and good planetary resolution. I was interested in your comment that LP90 is a good visual scope, but not so good for imaging.
My astrophotography goes back to the hypered film days, and since I have been out of the hobby for 15 years or so, I am not yet familiar with modern CCDs.
I would like to get a colour ccd camera at some stage, but I notice the LP90 has some ca at the red end on bright objects, so does this rule it out for colour ccd imaging?
casstony
18-05-2012, 12:47 PM
Glad to hear you got a good scope Laurie - did you determine if there was a particular aberration or lens assembly problem with the first one?
My comment about imaging was just a general one based on this being a fast fpl51 doublet - I have to focus very precisely to get views with no apparent CA and I imagine a colour CCD would be less forgiving.
Terry B
18-05-2012, 12:54 PM
I would ahve thought almost the opposite.
A 90mm scope of any type will only give dim views visually due to the limited light collection.
For photos with a monochrome CCD then you would just need to focus slightly differently for the blue channel.

The 90mm scope doesn't do well for close up views of DSO's. The C11 isn't so good for quick looks or wide fields. Different scopes for different jobs :) although I'm currently a bit overstocked with 3.5, 6, 8, 10 (and 12" in the mail) apertures.
I'm sure even colour CCD images through the scope would look nice, depending on how nit-picky one is about CA.

Thanks for you views tony and Terry. I have seen some very nice rich field images taken with small short focus refractors, and I accept they won't be much use on something like a galaxy. Just wanted an opinion of the imaging capabilities of a LP90.
The first scope suffered from too much spherical aberration

Here's a single frame taken with a dslr behind the Megrez 88 at prime - didn't have the right adapters to use a barlow unfortunately. I'll get a shot of the Moon when I can.

It's Baader visual solar film; I'd had a 10cm square piece laying in the draw for 10 years or more and cobbled together a filter and camera adapter for the Megrez the day before the transit.
Here's the setup and the wife looking dashing kitted out for solar viewing :)

:) Great set up .
Just goes to show what can be achieved with little money .
On the photo I cant see any CA in that shot , and the suns image behind the black disc of venus can be unforgiving .
Super sharp photo .

Well the photo quality certainly can't be put down to operator skill.
Tony: "How do you change the shutter speed"
Cass: "Give me a look"......... bumbles around with settings for a while.
Tony: "I'll go and have a look on the computer"............. "press the af button and turn the wheel"
Cass: "It's not working"
I go back over to the scope to help.
Cass: "Oh, there's another af button"
.......and so on :).
I've got some adapters on the way to connect the camera to my Hyperion zoom - be interesting to see if the CA shows up with more magnification. It was actually very easy to focus looking through the camera viewfinder, not as easy using the live-view screen.
It is a nice little scope for playing around with simple imaging. I even ordered a field flattener but I'll be limiting myself to what can be done without a laptop, guiding, etc. I guess I'll have to learn drift alignment.
