I've had a great time with this camera. I've used it for both terrestrial and lunar photography, and at both it excels. I've compared results to the slightly newer D40x and prefer the original. Many say the same. For lunar photography it's the best camera I've ever had - and consistently out-performed all of my Canons 350D, 400D, 40D and 5D-II in this regard. I don't know why, maybe the larger pixels have something to do with it. It has even given great results shooting Jupiter and its moons in a single shot - unstacked. Examples attached, and yes, the telescopes were first class and the seeing conditions fantastic on both occasions. For terrestrial use it's very light in weight, and is so much easier to tote around than any of my Canons. I do not use it for general deep space photography as I think the Canons perform better for this. Given that - it's a cracker lunar machine.
There are many dedicated D40 astrophotography users, and there is a dedicated Yahoo group, so go and have a look: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheNikonD40AstrophotogrphyGroup The D40 had far better noise and amp-glow characteristics than previous mainstream Nikon models such as the D70, so did rather well in astro circles.
