I've had a great time with this camera. I've used it for both terrestrial and lunar photography, and at both it excels. I've compared results to the slightly newer D40x and prefer the original. Many say the same. For lunar photography it's the best camera I've ever had - and consistently out-performed all of my Canons 350D, 400D, 40D and 5D-II in this regard. I don't know why, maybe the larger pixels have something to do with it. It has even given great results shooting Jupiter and its moons in a single shot - unstacked. Examples attached, and yes, the telescopes were first class and the seeing conditions fantastic on both occasions. For terrestrial use it's very light in weight, and is so much easier to tote around than any of my Canons. I do not use it for general deep space photography as I think the Canons perform better for this. Given that - it's a cracker lunar machine.

There are many dedicated D40 astrophotography users, and there is a dedicated Yahoo group, so go and have a look: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheNikonD40AstrophotogrphyGroup The D40 had far better noise and amp-glow characteristics than previous mainstream Nikon models such as the D70, so did rather well in astro circles.

Hi Chris, has this sold yet? Would you be interested in splitting out the T-ring and 2" adapter to sell separately? The remainder of the gear would still be quite sellable as a standard photography kit, and I bet half the people on ebay don't even know what those two things are :)

Hi chris, I would be interested in the camera body if you want to split.
Cheers, Bo

Hi guys. Sorry, I just want to sell as advertised. If it doesn't sell it'll go to my mother as is.

Bo - Yeah, no, sorry. Then I'll have two lenses that don't work on any other body that I own.

Thanks for the replies. :hi:

From memory it is the same CCD as the QHY8.

Do those batteries fit a D90?

Negative. The D90 uses EN-EL3e (same as the D100, 200, 300, 300s, etc)
The D40 uses the EN-EL9

Does the IR remote allow long exposures (does it have a lock) or is it just for triggering the shutter?

IR remote for cameras like D40 work similar to "T" mode on old cameras rather than Bulb mode. They are press to open shutter, press again to close shutter remotes usually. I have yet to see one which doesn't allow you to keep the shutter open.

Given this to my mother, so it is now withdrawn. Thanks for looking.
