Just want to congratulate Stu for launching a new aussie site/forum, South Celestial Pole (http://www.southcelestialpole.org).
Some old and familiar names and faces there. The more aussie sites the better.
It's a shame to see some anti-establishment/anti-IIS sentiment, but I guess that's to be expected in the early days. I'm sure it'll settle in to be a nice place to be.
And no, i'm not worried. I'm all for more aussie sites. Some people will find what they want at SCP, some will find it here, and some will find it at both.
Congrats again and good luck with the site Stu!

both for me at the moment, each is different and each satisfies different needs etc for me.

they will settle down, as they said. "at camp, they had heard you were a good bloke" and you are in my opinion.
I must say I am very impressed at your calmness under fire! You have had both barrels shot at you. You have not shot back.
Well done and I hope you can stay there and have some larrikan fun with us.

Thanks Davo
Snake Valley was an interesting experience more than anything seeing how people are in real life as compared to their online persona. Its so easy for communications to become skewed in the online world.
It was totally expected and all part of the fun :)
Now that the formalities are out of the way and everyone knows where they stand I will for the first time be able to defend myself on a level playing field without one hand tied behind my back ;)
If anyone is up for a laugh check out the "welcome Starkler" thread over there ;)

Good luck Stu. I find it hard to keep up with one forum let alone 2:shrug:
Thanks for all the kind and interesting comments :)
Sorry I didn't acknowledge this thread for a while I haven't logged on much the last few weeks as I've been busy with work. Going to the UK next week, visting new born babies this week, it's all happening in stu-land.
Yes Geoff you can defend yourself but hopefully no one will attack you, well maybe one or two (that dob of yours always sticks it's head in sct threads  ). I knew that if I set up a site that there would be all kinds of people logging on and some of them may not agree with each other. That's just the way it goes, not for me to get involved in. At least there is a sin bin where you can cool off ;) , not that anyone has ever been sent there. Early days yet though...:P
I have always like IIS and will continue to post here. I don't even really concider scp to be my site, strange as that might sound.
Must go walk the dog now she keeps giving me hints...

Diversity is the Key !
Good on you Stu for making the effort to kick this off.
Yeah ... good to have more Aussie astro sites to visit...
although it was a little too aggro for me. Bit like walking into a bar full of telescope wielding Chopper Reads!!!!
testosterone dripping off the dome walls over there:lol:
I'll still drop in from time to time, though.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted.
Not really my type of site but each to their own.

Choice is almost always a good thing...nice work in getting it set up all involved!
It will be interesting to see what kind of information and discussions become available as people get settled in and focused on astronomy stuff...
However, I heartily agree with some of the earlier posts...to date at least, it is not for the "faint hearted"...not sure if it is for me yet but I will keep an eye on it for a while at least...
just a warning tho, i dont recommend this site for children.... I know we have a few youngins who are member here so i'm just sayin that they have something called "mens language"...

Not for me. I agree with most of the earlier posts here. Not much astro stuff over there, more like a 'boys club' where anything goes. Interesting to see what happens after things settle down and moderators are used.

I never understood all the angst and acrimony. And I will admit that for a little while there it seemed to me that the moderation on Ice In Space was becoming a tad heavy handed (not that I cared too much myself; hey, it's not my site). OTOH the spam seemed to be getting a bit out of hand too.
Then I went and had a look at the other place. Well, thank god for mods, is all I can say. Frankly, if I was Mike I'd be grateful that someone has gone to the bother of setting up a public urinal off-site where aggrieved patrons can write their obscene graffiti. And if ever I feel the desire for some crotch-stretching, beer-swilling, spitoon-filling fun, then I guess I know where to go. In the meantime I think I'll stick with a forum that's got something to do with astronomy.
Thanks Mike and the mods.
Keep up the good work!
Starkler
01-04-2006, 03:19 PM
Well said Miaplacidus.
What wasnt obvious to the casual observer was that a small handful were working to undermine IIS and attack it when at its weakest from a moderation viewpoint (on two occasions in fact), and yes they did manage to do damage with some members shaking their heads and leaving in disgust at the carry on that was happening.
Thats all water under the bridge now and IIS can move on to bigger and better things :)
aren't you a member over there too, Geoff?

Public urinal, crotch - stretching, beer swilling, hard hitting stuff there, and not a touch of tolerance, well done.
Because the guys on the other site, of which l am one deciede to enjoy their love of astronomy mixed with some behavoir that does not follow IIS guidelines does not make them or me some sort of ratbag.
If some of those that have bagged this site in the past few posts took the time to note some of the members and the ability and knowledge they have in certain areas of astronomy and l use Paul aka Rumples Riot as one, and his brilliant astrophotography you would see that astronomy is the underlying point of why they are there.
These guys just want to enjoy their astronomy without the direction they take being dictated by others, the people on the site dictate this themselves.
l enjoy both sites and can see the benefits of both.

01-04-2006, 06:18 PM
You are right, Mick, on this score, with regard to the talent, and I stand corrected. (And don't think I don't recognize your own contribution to amateur astronomy as well.) But astronomy as the underlying point is being obscured by a fair amount of overlying offal.
BTW, I would feel awful if Stu mistook my comments for personal criticism of himself, but of course why would he not? - I appreciate his efforts and initiative in setting up the site, and I ought never to have referred to his site in the way I did. Sincere apologies, Stu. I truly hope your place turns into a successful astro site.
BUT, the style of an institution depends on its members much more than it does on its founder. (I hear that Jesus Christ and Mohammad were both quite nice chaps.) AND I think it is fair comment that some of the members there are using language that is frankly offensive, and that a few are denigrating individuals, as well as our beloved IIS. Perhaps Stu might like to know that these members are alienating quite a few potential members. (Ironic, hey?)
I like a site where kids can play, but mainly I hate acrimony. As others have said, I hope they can dispell the bitterness and develop into a successful astro site.
(And then perhaps an ecumenical union???)

I was going to keep out of it - and there has been gratutious baggin of iis there and thats unfortunate, i wish it would settle down.
but being a member I will have to stick up for scp against this self righteous posturing here (sadly to common here) and say havent you guys got anything better to do than visit a site you had made up your minds about already and knew you wouldnt like before you went there? LOL
Interesting its brought a few lurkers out of the woodwork ;)

01-04-2006, 06:27 PM
Yes, I know. I've been told to, ... well ... can't repeat it here. I thought I was doing good for SCP, creating a bit of publicity after a bit of a dry spell and having a bit of lighthearted fun at the same time, which I did not intend to be at anyone's expense but it was taken that way by the two apostles. :(
Apparently that good "sense of humour" IIS is supposed to be lacking and SCP's got by the truckload, does not recognise IIS moderators. That is the only explanation I can think of.

You should have left this thread dead and buried Steve :)
asimov
01-04-2006, 06:40 PM
No Steve, I don't think being a IIS moderator had anything to do with it. I think it was simply taken the wrong way, purely & simply. I couldn't see anything wrong with what you did, but donning the 'apostle cap' I can see how it could have been seen/taken in a different way, other than your intention.

I joined up for a look, always good to have some competition, but it's not my cup of tea (and I'm no wowser when it comes to colourful language). Basically it's because of the signal to noise ratio (I have even posted this opinion over there). I will keep an eye on it every now and then to see if it settles down.

02-04-2006, 02:02 PM
Not the case here. I checked it out as I genuinely thought it may be another good a source of astro information. The first thread I opened was full of people swearing at each other for no apparent reason other than they could. The second one I opened had links to ****ographic material as some kind of joke. I won't put a link to that thread as I know there are young IIS members. I don't think pathetic sums it up. When people get over the fact that they can post whatever they want on that forum I think it will die as I did not see a single astro related post while I was there. There may be some very useful information on that site, I however do not want to sift through the **** to try and find it. Sorry Stu, but I think the actions of your initial members are going to turn a lot of people away.

:) I reckon it's pretty cool that there is an alternative to disneyworldinspace, even if it is a ribald 'hootersworld' type alternative, as this oppressive 'what about the children!' a la EDIT: (woops) mrs rev lovejoy from simpsons , was alienating some very good people.
Once the last of the howls of indignation (some dripping with testosterone?) have stopped echoing around the hallowed halls of disneyinspace, people will wonder what all the fuss was about.
CJ that is taking it a bit far to say there is no astro content i think.
Yeah Kearn. Dripping with testosterone. A colourful description, I know... but effective.
That's my take on some of the gratuitous use of language and very blokey sexual humour. Bit macho, don't you think? A little puffy chested. Not that I'm offended by it, It's just an observation which strikes me as fairly obvious. Not that I'm averse to behaving the same from time to time.
And for the record I am a member of that site, so it's not as if i'm intolerant or unable to accept it.
Who am I speaking with? Blind Freddy?
And while you're busy questioning other people about why they go there if they don't like it, why would you bother to be part of disneyworldinspace if it clearly irks YOU so much??? Most confusing, Kearn.

LOL Matt, I think they are just making a statement for now, I am sure that when their/our point is driven home, it is likely to abate :)
I find it hard to take it seriously that ANY amateur astronomers are serious contenders for the 'chopper reid award' or a threat to society, thats just an oxymoron.
My impression of the very general front bar publics view on the pursuit of such activities is to be that of an effeminate nerds bordering on some kind of possibly contagious form of obsessive autism or worse - sorry just saying what I know to be the reality.
maybe scp will help fight that stereotype?
mate...
again.. the point of the Chopper reference was to simply make a point, not something to be taken literally.
I'm quite aware the boys are just stretching their wings and making full use of the freedoms the new site affords them.
But keep blinding us with your keen insight into the common man.
PS be careful trotting out your version of "reality" in such a didactic manner. Sounds a little authoritarian. Thought you had a problem with that type of behaviour?

Trying to maintain a friendly relaxed atmosphere and having a set of reasonable rules and guidelines can hardly be seen as oppressive.
I think those most aggrieved are the few who thought they could influence site policy, rules and guidlines by flouting them, pushing the boundaries and trying to win support for some kind of popular revolution :screwy:
Thankfully that didnt succeed and we still have disneyworldinspace to enjoy in its current form . Despite all the noise and bluster about how many were disenchanted, it turned out to be not very many .
Perhaps if the people over at scp focus on what they can do to build their site instead of spending so much energy on postulating over how bad disneyworldinspace is, it is much more likely to suceed.

Yes I'll admit I had my 'fun' in there for a couple of days, just to test the waters (& Stu the head honcho) ;) And I will continue to have 'fun' to a degree. Because there is hardly any moderation there, I've chosen to moderate myself. That means no swearing from me. It's MY choice apparently. I'm still a male aussie though, if someone wants to post a pic of a chick in a bikini, I'll comment on it, too right I will! :P

Anyway, let's not turn this into an us versus them.. People can make up their own minds what they're after in an astronomy forum.
As I said in the first post of the thread, some will like SCP better than IIS, some will like IIS better than SCP, and some will play at both. Let's just leave it that.
If they want to keep bagging IIS and our strict and unfair rules and over moderation, then they'll get people that want to do the same. I'm certainly not going to let IIS be a place to bag another site.

I think the moderation rules are quite fair & just here Mike (you know as well as anyone else, I found out how far I could push things as far as spam/silly posts went back in the 'good Ol' dayz' :D ) I've never had a problem with it. I think it's fair to say some folk have no 'internal moderator' & cut loose with all sorts of rubbish, simply because they CAN. Some NEED moderating.
