This is a nice explanation of the rules of cricket for those that dont understand the game. Aimed at a US ordience but still well written with a toung firmly planted in the authors cheek.

Oh why get so complicated. Here are the "classic" simple rules:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.

When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

peter you have been watching too much of the "two ronnies" or "who's on third" a classic abbott and costello sketch, actually the two pollies of the same name are just as funny

How about Golf.

Balance a ball on top of a little tiny stick with a flat top and hit it with a bigger stick with a flat side until it goes in a hole.
Do this 18 times then go into the building and drink beer all the rest of the day :P

:D

Nahh! Golf is a good walk spoiled!

A debate as to who first said this still rages, nevertheless, I think it is true. :D Rather kill myself than play golf...it would be less painful

On the other hand, fishing is another story..... :P

If like me, you didn't grow up with cricket, you have not hope of understanding it (and getting into it)

That's probably true of most sports. Just imagine moving to America and trying to understand grid iron or baseball. I have enough trouble try to understand NASCAR's.

well for starters with grid iron you need two separate teams for the one side and two separate teams for the other...and oh yes a tape measure!
and nascar is even harder...... a one way oval track flat out.... real hard to understand!

How hard is cricket to make sense of..I never realized till I read this and saw someone explaining..presumably for Americans..

But wasn't it fun to play way back when in the B13s

And we won the grand final that year I might add, though I personally cheered the team from the bench in the grand final...competition was fierce for spots

Pat, it isn't just a case of an oval and all cars going the same way. Try figuring out placements in pack racing. Not so easy! :)

I once heard golf described as a game designed by sadists to be played by masochists.
