I have a Canon 550D with a 18-55mm lens with a stabilzer.

When I have the lens set 18mm the auto focus works fine.
When I have the lens set to anywhere from 19mm to 55mm the auto focus fails and keeps searching for focus.

I have a 90-300mm lens and when I attach it the camera, the auto focus works fine.

No error messages are dislayed.

Any suggestions.

What are you focusing on?

Have you chosen which focus point to focus with? Try setting the centre point for focus and point it at an object with some contrast. Does the problem still occur?

I tried focusing on various objects , books, trees and at various distances from 1m to 15m at the problem was the same. Focus ok at 18mm , but had problems on with 19mm+.

Select the centre point only and see if that focuses.

By the look of it-may be lens fault. Check focusing in manual mode. If ok-look at the contacts in the lens mount. May be dirty or oxydized. VERY gentle rubbing with alcohol may help. Go not touch camera contacts! If still not ok-go to service centre. You have nothing else to do. If camera off warranty already-check if it's cheaper to buy this lens off e-bay.
