it does sound nutty, but amazing amount of dedication and persistence.
I wonder how his partner put up with it, if he had a partner that is.

As my mum says to my wife, at least he's not down the pub every night coming home drunk.

There are a lot of folk into RC but this line of scale models is quite complex, with actual hydraulics, actuators, joints and a fair bit of engineering, and need to withstand dust and rough conditions.
He being a farmer has taught himself all these disciplines and built one of the trucks himself.
Its like the backhoe in certain playgrounds for kids, he's taken it to the next level.

If only he could of used RC heilcopters in there somewhere then the good folk here on IIS would of really been excited.

Reminds me of 'The Castle':

"Dale dug a hole. Tell 'em Dale!"
"I dug a hole"

One of my daughters is working over in Canada ATM and says that there is definitely a cabin fever syndrome in winter.

Drives them nuts so they take up hobbies just to occupy themselves when cooped up.

That said...that's way cool!

His reasoning behind how he got into this is here
http://carscoop.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/meet-joe-man-who-excavated-his-basement.html

from the same article

"What a better place to have an all-weather playground than under your house? It's just a few steps away when I have time for it, it’s a comfy place to be when it’s –30C [-22 Fahrenheit] outside.

I'm a cattle and grain farmer... or rather I used to have cattle as I sold the 150-head herd a few months ago; getting too old and brittle for that cowboy crap anymore. Now I just spend 7 months of the year cropping 3,400 acres and haul out the crop through the winter.

There are weeks on end throughout the growing season with 16-hour workdays and then there are weeks on end during the winter when I have very little to do, but couldn’t travel far with cows to feed everyday all winter long.

Some of the techniques that I have learned in electronics, welding and machining for this hobby has come in handy for making complicated repairs and improvements in my farming operation too."

I'm tempted to cordon off three areas in my backyard, one for my scope, one for the kids pets, and one to dig!!.
I don't think that idea is going to go down well though.

We just had the first V8Super Tourer event over here at the racetrack in Hampton Downs and they used a large model RC helicopter to fly vid cam over the start grid and home straight. I was watching at home on Sunday and it was amazingly stable. Cars were super as well !!
