Hi Mick

I use DSLRFocus for focus and shutter control, Hap Griffin cables (http://www.hapg.org/astrocables.htm) for remote control. Long USB cable for up to 30 seconds and a Long Serial cable with LED's for long exposure.

DSLRFocus allows you to do 4 second real time focus shots on a small section of your shot and graphs the results to get your focus spot on. In Capture Mode you can setup how you want your sequence to run with how many shots, duration, ISO, time between etc you can setup an automated multi sequence if you like as well.

I am sure others will also comment.

I just use a wireless remote, cost me $20 off ebay. It can do 2 sec self timer or immediate.

RB also made me a nice wired controller too, with half/full shutter control.

G'day Mick,

For a start, I do not do serious astrophotography. When I do take pictures of the night sky for a star trail or even an aircraft trail then I use the cable release that you can buy for the 350D. I have heard that if you are handy with a soldering iron and know one end from the other then you can knock up a cheap and perfectly adequate cable release of your own.

I'm not at all handy with a soldering iron (I refer you to the Great Fire of London) so opted to spend the dollars and get the Canon brand cable release.

Peter.

DSLR Focus and Star-Mate for me. Might need Mr Robby to comment on the cable that came with the Star-Mate. I'm with Volans in the electrical technolology dept.

I use the canon RS-60E3 remote switch wich also accomodates for the mirror lock up in the custom function set up, but you probably already knew that.

Mick,

For daytime shots, I use the Canon wireless remote; it's also fine for doing 30 second exposure astrophotographs (with mirror lock-up, as well).

For the long exposures, I built myself a serial cable (my first electronics project since high school) and it works perfectly with DSLR Focus.

All the parts were available from D_ick (underscore used to prevent censoring) Smith Electronics.

Click here (http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/CanonRelease.html) for the circuit diagram and photographic reference I used for when building mine.

It took all of ten minutes to build.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Humayun
