Nice shots Patrick! I especially like the buff-rumped thornbill with its lunch.

A lovely portfolio showing a range of quite wonderful creatures. The Scarlet Robin and Buff-rumped Thornbill have a high cuteness coefficient. The quality of the light is quite wonderful in these shots.

Bloody-marvellous! Off camera flash? How did you have it set up?

Thanks everyone!
I have a cable (unbranded, cost me about $30 as opposed to $99 for the Canon). I have used an old flash bracket, but often now I just hold the flash in my left hand and the camera in the right. I can usually rest the camera on the wrist of the left arm and then position the flash at any angle I like. I'm surprised at how well it's worked so far.

Oh I see. So the flash isn't very far away from the camera, as a pose to being on top of it?
