Funny story..I've been photographing wildlife around Canberra for some time now, as you probably know. I've lived here 7 years or so. I was asked a few months ago if I had any photos of a Gang-gang, to which I replied, "A what?" I had honestly never heard of one. The wildlife officer I was talking to was incredulous! "They are only Canberra's faunal emblem! They are on the side of all the national parks cars." I honestly hadn't ever noticed.

Since then, I have been on the lookout and have not seen one until today. Mowing a lawn at an embassy in town, this thing was not more then three feet from me, chattering away happily while munching on conifer nuts.

I didn't have my big camera and lens on me, so all I could do was pull out my horrible little Nokia phone-camera. Luckily, I got within a couple of feet of him before he flew away.

The ladies from the embassy also came bolting out with their P&S camera's and started taking photos from behind me. I think I might have to buy a decent P&S to take with me in the work ute. It's too risky to take my big guns.

So far I've taken most of my wildife photo's way up in the mountains and away from the city. Do ya reckon the embassies in town would get sus when I start sneaking around in a ghillie-suit and a 400mm lens? ;)

Baz, if you get him from the right angle, we might see his gang-gang-goolies!

Cheers,
Jason.

They are very pretty birds. Apart from being uncommon I think they also go unnoticed because they are quite quiet, which is not common in the parrot family. Here's a female taken near Dargo a few years ago. The day was 40* and I think we were both happy to hide in the deepest shade around.

They are great birds. I do think you'd have to be careful with sneaking around embassies with a 400mm lens. New recruits to ASIO would be keen to bring you in:lol:.

Not as yet Baz

We do get a lot of Cockatoo's though, both white and black varietys.
Then there's the little grass parrots and Rosella's
