Hi Brian,

We saw the news reports last night of the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck
the Philippines near Cebu and Negros that has sadly resulted in loss of life
including from houses being buried in landslides. This must be extremely close
to where you are in Dumaguete. Hope all is well.

It is interesting to note how phenomena such as avalanches and landslides are
going to be universal and undoubtedly exist on many terrestrial planets and the link
to the stunning image brings this home.

What makes this image particularly compelling is the angle that it was captured from.

We are okay. Not even any structural damage. the quake was about 60 miles away but it was a rocker. We live on a dormant volcano so are used to tremors but this was on an entirely different scale.

Nope it is 'if'. 8 is great and I will only seriously consider a new telescope when I have pushed this one to it's limit and in all honesty i just can't imagine that happening.

We heard reports that there was some panic in Cebu City and Dumaguete City
as people fled fearing a tsunami. In light of tragic events in recent years, it
is understandable how people will react.

Our thoughts go to those who have suffered loss.

glad you're safe, but not from Aperture Fever, warren is right we all get it. Progress through the stages can differ but it will happen. Most go through the 8.... 10......12.......16 if you go over this you've got it bad. In general you know it has run it's coarse if you find yourself ordering a 5 inch refractor! LOL

So what do people who already have 5" refractors want? Larger refractors or just better quality ones.

Amazing image Brian! :thumbsup: Yes, I think most aperture fever is actually aperture envy, pity. Only briefly & mildly infected, and not coincidentally when I first joined IIS, funny 'bout that! ;) Got over it very quickly though with no harm done. Astronomy's about enjoying what you're seeing, not worrying about what you could be seeing or what somebody else might be seeing.
