Hello everyone,

Many of you may be aware of the passing of a champion of Astronomical sketching, Scott Mellish. The Astronomical Society of New South Wales (http://members.asnsw.com/) in Australia has organised an Astronomical sketching competition in his honour.

The Scott Mellish Sketching Competition (http://members.asnsw.com/sketching_competition) is an international competition.

Entry details, rules and the required submission template are all available on the competition link.

Any questions you may have you can use the competition's email address, sketchingcomp@asnsw.com , or here on this IIS thread.

Note that judging is done by way of popular vote on the 21st of April this year at the South Pacific Star Party (http://members.asnsw.com/node/8) in Australia. Entries need to be received before then for inclusion. There are two categories, Deep Sky and Solar System, and upto 2 entries per category are permitted.

PLEASE read the rules carefully as this is a "pencil and paper" competition only.

The "template" is the perscribed way that a sketch needs to be presented for submission to provide a standardised form. The sketch can be done either on white or black paper, but needs to be laid out following the template.

Many thanks to the Iceman for making this thread possible.

Good luck and clear skies,

Alex.

What a fantastic idea both to promote sketching and honour Scott. There will no doubt be some excellent work entered!

The sentiment is great, but based on my personal experience with Scott, I think there would be no need for a competition. Simply having a good solid go would mark you as a winner in his eyes.

Hi all,

There are now less than 8 weeks until the South Pacific Star Party. If you are considering making submissions from outside of Australia, remember to allow at least three to four weeks for the parcel to arrive through the mail. This leaves less than four weeks to finalize your entry and get it posted.

Of cause, the ASNSW cannot be held responsible for mail arriving late. The quality of any country's postal service is beyond anyone's control. for that matter, the sooner you dispatch your entry the less risk it arrives late.

Clive, I understand your sentiments. But by the same token, Scott's many friends at the ASNSW felt that to best honour his memory and promote the niche of astro sketching that Scott championed, that this competition was organised. Anyone who's never sketched then feels inspired to pick up a pencil and paper and sit at the eyepiece and have a shot, I think the competition has earnt its keep.

If you have never seen the work that Scott produced, follow this link to Astronomy Sketch of the Day's list of Scott Mellish sketches (http://www.asod.info/?s=scott+mellish&x=0&y=0). The link tags any ASOD entry that has Scott's name quoted in it, including a couple of mine as I mentioned Scott's inspiration in my work. But these two pages are the complete set of work Scott had published on ASOD, the only site that Scott made submissions to.

Good luck and clear skies.

Hi all,

We’ve been asked about the situation with returning entries to their owners. The solution that has been come up with is every entrant will be asked via email if they would like their entries returned. Those who do will then be sent a quote for the cost of the return mail from our Australia Post. The entrant then pays into the ASNSW Paypal account the quote amount and the entry/entries will be returned.

I believe you do not need to have a Paypal account to use Paypal to make a payment, only a credit card.

Account details will be forwarded with subsequent correspondence.

Cheers,

Alex.
