Found this rather neat app that can be downloaded onto Iphone for $2.99 or used through your PC. Its listed as a Computational Knowledge (search) Engine.
Heres the Wiki on it.

Here's the site for PC.

From an amateur viewpoint can get some really useful data (i.e. Radial Velocity or what size aperture is needed and a current sky location) re NGC & IC objects with a DSS image.

While you're at it Peter- also look up the iDevice app called "Wolfram Stars" - it's a little more specific to astronomy.

Also, when you ask Siri science-related questions on the iPhone 4S, it looks up answers via Wolfram Alpha.

That is very funny Chris:lol:
Ok edited and added only my second smiley ever.
Or perhaps it goes in one pocket and $2.99 comes out of the other pocket.

Wolfram Alpha and Wolfram Stars run OK on my iPhone 4
Wolfram Planets and Wolfram Tides both ask if they can use my location and then hang.

Yes - and saying that is sooooo 2006.
Until a better place is discovered, mine will stay there.
