PAYMENT OF ALL FEES TO BE MADE ON ARRIVAL

- The observing field has 240v power.
- There are 12 bunkhouses (from 2 to 8 bunks) and lots of camping space on the observing field.
- Caravans welcome.
- Hot showers & toilets in a caravan park style amenities block.
- Large dining room for about 60 people
- Recreation room (billiards, table tennis)
- Fully equipped kitchen with all cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, fridges etc.
- Lake for swimming, fishing, canoeing etc.
- BBQ facilities

*Please note, Bunkhouses CANNOT be booked for one night only.
We have previously lost bookings due to bunkhouses being used for only one night when people wanted to book them for 3 or 4 nights and couldn't because of the 'one night' stayer booking it first.
Exceptions are accepted if you are in a shared bunkhouse with others staying more than one night.
Alternatively, the campsite is available for one night if that's all you can stay.

*Alcohol is allowed, but 'drunkeness' will not be tolerated. Offenders will be asked to leave.

* Aerosols of any description (Aeroguard, deodorent etc) are TOTALLY BANNED on the observing field. Stray spray could (and has) permanently damage optics.

Snake Valley Astronomy Camps are fun, low key social events. A white light ban is in force (as expected), but due to the nature of our camps, imagers and observers are all mixed in together having a great social astronomy experience. Visual observers that may be offended by some stray laptop light may be affected.

Keep watching this thread for any updated details about the november 2011 svaa astronomy camp at snake valley

thank you
SVAA

THE BUNKHOUSES
The 12 bunkhouses range from 2, 4, or 6 bunks up to several with 8 bunks (4 sets of upper and lower bunks).

They have mattresses, but no bed linen. You will need to supply your own sheets, blankets, doona's, and pillows. Or just throw a sleeping bag on the mattress.

CAMPING
The observing field/camping area is on a very gentle slope to assist drainage, bordered on the west by trees and the road, and on the east by the lake. Plenty of room for a lot of people to camp and set up.
240v power is supplied.

SKY
Very dark. There is a faint light dome visible low in the east, coming from Ballarat, Melbourne and Geelong.

COOKING

After several years of juggling things so I was clear to attend camp Mar and Nov, it has finally happened - I have a work commitment that weekend that I cannot avoid. I was clear until a few weeks ago when a schedule had to be changed. So, unless something unexpected happens, I won't make the March camp.

Emiel and I have to give this one a miss this time. Literally missed the boat. Fares on the Spirit are a bit expensive at the moment.

With any luck though I'll be attending a Pizza and Telescope Night at Moriarty near Devonport in Tassie.

Clear skies.

PS Ken I'd like to renew my SVAA membership so if you could PM me details for depositing money or other prefered method that would be great.

Cheers

Mike

Can I come?:D

What about power for AP gear. Cooled DSLR? Fan noise? Maybe the back paddock?

mill
10-02-2012, 11:30 PM
Yeh Rowland you can come :)
Just tell us what night's, camping/bunkhouse, Sat night meal etc.
There is power for ap and there is no back paddock.
We love noise (you will see when there :P ).

Martin.

ballaratdragons
10-02-2012, 11:39 PM
Yeah, I doubt we will hear your fan over the Rock'n'roll playing out of someones radio, the yelling across the field, the coffee grinder mounts slewing about, the laughter etc etc
I think we should be able to drown out the noise of any fan

Back Paddock? There is ONE observing field and we are all on it

rcheshire
11-02-2012, 06:53 AM
Thanks. This is my first time to a star party. Sounds like fun.

Driving up from Geelong Saturday afternoon for a casual overnight visit. No specific bunk/camping requirements etc.

Saturday night feast - Yes!

...will make whatever remuneration is necessary for incidentals - tea/coffee etc. Let me know how all that works - happy to bring my own snacks drinks etc.

mill
11-02-2012, 10:23 AM
Just bring your own drinks and snacks and have fun

mishku
11-02-2012, 03:53 PM
November was my first star party - and I went up, thinking "if it's terrible, I can leave after just one night, right???"

It was so much fun, I recommend planning to stay another night too, just in case :)

ballaratdragons
11-02-2012, 07:09 PM
Yep, it works this way: you will owe us $65 for the incidentals, $35 for the tea/coffee, another $35 for the privilege

Nah, just bring anything you might want. Midnight snacks, coffee, sugar.
I'm sure I can spot you some milk :)
You won't need anything for the feast except whatever you want to drink.

The Feast comes with Dessert too
Be prepared to get very full of food

Although you aren't booking accommodation I will book you into the Feast so I have correct numbers for the caterers.

If you change your mind in the meantime and decide to stay over just let me know so I can book you a spot on the field, then you can throw up a tent when you get here

Hello.

Well I have Sacrificed a few things to appease the gods of weather and swell namely "Huey" for the Snake Valley Astro Camp.

If your a surfer you will know him quite well.

A fickle Swell and Weather god but once he or she are appeased you are rewarded with perfect conditions.:eyepop:

Anyway the sacrifices made are

1: Stop drinking beer until the Astro camp ( again if your a surfer you now how hard that is):mad2:
2: No Macca,s until the astro camp.
3: I do everything my wife tells me to do around the house without complaint.

If that doesn't work I am dusting off the old longboard and go surfing more often ;)

Regards Paul.

Also, this years Funds raised from the Feast goes to CERT, not CFA.
Same food, same cooks etc, just that the local CFA doesn't need the funds at the moment so it is going to the local CERT

CERT - http://www.colacambulance.com/colac_cert.htm :)

They are life savers when Ambulances are sooooo far away.

ballaratdragons
18-03-2012, 06:06 PM
Thanks for ordering from our online shop Cam
but they come all the way from USA.

Their timing is pretty good though. Whenever I order something they have to put the order through their system, print it, then post it overseas to me and it usually gets here within 10 days.
That's faster than the 11-12 days it takes for mail to get to me from QLD!

HAHA Thanks Rob.. Im going to be checking out everyone imaging. Ive played a bit with sharpcap and a bit with wxastrocapture.. I still dont understand the histogram and settings. The only usable stuff I have got is on the sun through a PST. I dont go very well at night on the imaging side so stick to mainly observing. Also I have an explore scientific 82 degree 14mm. Im really keen to try it out against some of the more expensive Eps of the same FOV and see how it compares if anyone will let me.

I have been working my buns off at home painting up and down ladders, crawling around in tight places, and this old body just aint up to scratch and it has decided to remind me I am no longer a young fella. I do have issues with my lower spine with virtually no discs in some places, the vertibrae are virtually touching. As it is I go to the physio every 3 weeks for a touch up, but I reckon I have been over doing it and am paying the price.

Doug, I'm sure even posting an intention to own new gear days before the camp is verbotten! I can supply plenty of raw data for you to process in your idle hours. Everyone assures me there's plenty there but I'll be f$%&*d if I can tease it out.

Hi,
would anyone happen to have a cats eye collimation kit?
I'm having woes with my 8" F4 and the focuser alignment. Driving me nuts.
Laser shows fine, but stars are elongated on one side.
Erick, would be cool if we could try that Ronchi grating screen as well.

Hi Leon, I've been to dozens of Astro camps and don't have one picture of the people or the setup to show for it. I always ake the DSLR but never get it out so this is the time for me to post all those shots of everyone missbehaving.

mill

We don't misbehave at all
We are all very well behaved and not a sound comes out of the tents if something goes wrong again and again :P
Will Darren be swimming again as he did last time The water is this cold - this time :eyepop: ).

Paddy, that's no good at all - hope you're better soon. You're gunna miss out on all the Princess Misako updates on Saturday night!

Well, the ute is packed to the gunwales and I'm just waiting for the clock to tick over to a semi respectable time to leave.I have a nagging feeling I've left something behind but hopefully compenstated by the many multiples of other tings I've brought along.

Ken - start the sunshine dance......now

Don't panic about the weather, guys!

I've practically guaranteed good weather by purchasing stylish cold weather gear which I can't wait to wear on the weekend. I swear, it's a solid gold guarantee that it will be clear and warm ALL WEEKEND LONG.

PS. Post 248 before camp started. I bet Ken's not even AWAKE yet :)
