Jupiter - changing appearance

hi. For interest, put together scaled down versions of the 4 images of the GRS region that I have from this apparition to show how dynamic the appearance of planet is. A few observations from the collected images:
- the NEB (lower dark band) has become much thinner/weaker over the last 6 months - it used to have barges (the dark elongated ovals) embedded in it, but the current barges are floating in a sea of light coloured stuff. Is it going to fade out completely?
- there have been some pretty stable barges and white ovals develop over the last few months.
- it is fascinating to trace out the motions of peristent features in the various bands and zones relative to the GRS.
- the turbulent swirls on the downwind side of the GRS are very variable and have been quite spectacular this apparition

Yes Ray, good images to show the changes.

The barges have certainly been left behind in the whiter band.
It appears that the brown band has receded, leaving the barges out in the white stuff.

Nice images Ray. Jupiter is certainly an ever (& quickly) changing & dynamic planet. That's one of the things that makes it exciting to photograph.

Very intersting to see the difference over that timeframe. Looking at each of the zones they all have features that look a bit different in some way.

Thanks Ray Those photos are excellent.
I saw the Red Spot for the first time a month or so ago and was very happy. Had seen a few cloud bands previously but one evening just after sun down the 'seeing' became incredible so we put the 10mm into a 3x barlow just to see and were absolutely knock out. No shimmer and incredibly clear. It was great.
Your pics are a nice reminder.

you are right Michael - the whole thing is variable, as a gas planet should be I guess.

thanks Trevor. it's nice when the seeing clears - but it didn't happen a lot this apparition. the GRS region is certainly spectacular, even in less than perfect seeing
