View Full Version here: : Southern Cross Akira Fujii Style

After my wide field attempt of the region around the southern cross I decided to attempt a more close up look. This time I used a 135 f2 DC lens I have and I think this works well.
I used the stars of the previous session to give the Akira Fujii style to the southern cross.
What I really like is that the coal sack is not just one solid mass. It is composed of lots and lots of little knots and nodules which are interspersed with stars shining through the dust.

Tell me if you think this works or why not.

Crux is such a hard object to image nicely, I think you managed it well Paul

Done some research and I yes it might appeal. :)
Thanks Marc. It probably needs shorter subs to get the colours right for the cluster.

An amazing amount of detail Paul.
What creates the halos around the main stars in Crux, its got me intrigued.
Cheers Petra d.

Thanks guys and gals
Petra the halos come from the high cloud during exposure. Akira used filters to achieve his results. Not to everyones taste but it does highlight the constellation main stars well.

Very nice Paul!
The halos highlight the main stars of the constellation and show us the colors of them.

I'll be honest - I like some elements of it but not others. I like the Coal Sack, the background star/dust colour and clarity, and a-crux. However the other three stars, particularly g-crux I find the halo isn't quite right - the edge is too defined perhaps. I do like diffused stars in photo's and enjoy taking such shots, but this one doesn't quite work for me primarily because of g-crux I think, perhaps I'm being picky, sorry :)
