Don't think I'd every seen a fly with this colour scheme and pattern before. Would be interested to know what type it is, but I was captivated by how beautiful its colours come out when up close. The white spots are what caught my attention otherwise don't think I would have shot off close to 50 or so captures :P, and these are my feable attempt at the pick of them.

Great eye detail Adam!

I just had a look in my "Wildlife of Brisbane" book, and it looks like Amenia imperialis to me. Here's a link to some info! (http://www.ozanimals.com/Insect/Snail-Parasite-Blowfly/Amenia/imperialis.html)

Cheers,
Stephen

WOW! What lens and aperture were you using? Any focus-stacking?

Great shot Adam.

For an annoying little critter, they really are quite photogenic.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments guys.,
Baz: Sigma 105mm macro, 1/160s @ f11, external flash with off-camera bracket and one of those funky collapsable diffusers. No focus stacking here but it's definitely something I'd like to do next to get more detail. I've even mucked around with reversing an old 50mm Konica Hexanon lens on the end of the Sigma but with the additional weight and magnification, it's unrealistic for hand held shooting. What I'd really like to get next is a Canon MP-E 65mm macro (http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/lenses/canon_65_2p5_macro):)
