I recently got outside in a dark sky for my second attempt at imaging with my Canon 500D. This time the targets were Carina and a very wide shot of the crux. I took more data this time and also applied darks, flats and biases (with DeepSkyStacker). Here are the results:

Carina, 20x8 sec @ 50mm f1.4 Canon prime lens, ISO400 (http://i.imgur.com/Gs2p3.jpg)
Full Res ~5Mb (http://i.imgur.com/Mswer.jpg)

Crux over Torquay, 1x6 sec @ 18mm f3.5 (Canon EF-S 18-170mm) ISO800 (http://i.imgur.com/0g0ki.jpg)

Thanks for looking

Nice photos J.

I like the detail in your Carina shot and your wide shot looks good with the foreground in it.

I presume you had your camera on a photo tripod.
With your Canon camera, you can probably push the ISO to 1600 if you use In Camera Noise Reduction.
With your lens at 18mm you can stretch exposure times to about 30 secs without getting too much star trailing.

Good luck.

Ross.

Not bad Jay, I like the Crux over the sea photo

I have only just started wide field DSLR imaging too :) (Nikon D7000) but I have done very little.
