Hey folks, my daughter & her electrician boy friend were under the house checking some wiring for me when they encountered this fella. I'm think he's a gecko of some sort but not too sure. Anyone know?

That certainly looks like some version of a Ghecko, mind you it has an interesting flattened tail...

That's correct - it's a Leaf Tailed Gecko.

We commonly encounter them indoors, particularly in the basement where there are sandstone ledges,
in this corner of Sydney at Mount Kuring-Gai.

I have quite a few photos of them myself. Their camouflage is amazing. They can make quite a squeal if need be.

Um I beg to differ Gary.....
I'm sure its called "TruckTyreSquashed Tailed Gecko".
However you are right that they hide in basements ( to avoid trucks) and yes, they do squeal loudly !( after being run over..... of course)
:D:P;)
Cheers

Yep, a Leaf Tailed Gecko. We have heaps of them here at our place. They love to live in darkish moist places, they love our garage which has for one wall a natural sandstone outcrop.

Interestingly, sometimes they drop their tail for defence or escape, but once when I ran over one's tail and squashed it, the gecko died rather than dropping the tail.

One night I was in the garage and heard a very loud barking sort of noise, and wondered for a while where it was coming from. After a short while I realised I was standing on one of these little fella's!

Cheers,
Jason.

Hence their other common name - 'barking gecko'. Quite common round here on the north shore !
