Adrian, Joining a club is a great idea. You're very :welcome: to join us at The Macarthur Astronmical Society. www.macastro.org.au (http://www.macastro.org.au)
We meet in Campbelltown at U.W.S. and we have two dark sky sites we visit, 1/2 hour and 1 hour from Campbelltown.

Depends where in Sydney you live. If western Sydney is an option we would love to see a new member in WSAAG http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/wsaag/
Our main observing site is in the Blue Mountains and we meet monthly at UWS Werrington.
Cheers
