Which Canon camera??

I have 450D for quite a few years, which I have been very happy with, but want to increase the ISO capabilities, so after another.

Alas, my budget is only about the $500 so cameras with the word 'mark' in it are not an option. :D

Have been looking at 500D/550D/600D/1000D/1100D ..... all kinda within the range, give or take.

Phil (Acropolite) has suggested a 2nd hand 40d which I hadnt considered, and there is a 2nd hand one on ebay for $480.

I would imagine that cameras newer than the 40D have better high ISO capability.

40D at $480 is a steal.

The ISO range of the 40D is from 100-1600. Most of those cameras above have ranges from 100-6400.

But a 40D at $480 is cheap.

ISO range does not tell everything.
Check reviews on www.dprevire.com, www.photozone,de or other sites on ISO performance.
I have a 40d which performs excellently at 1600 and 3200, but the 60d might perform 1 stop better.
Another impotant thing: Do not use the full resolution because then you see more grain and lens errors unless you have heavy and expensive L lenses.

ISO is everything for astrophotography, particularly single shots.

That camera works brilliantly for long exposure photography through scopes.

I had much success with it shooting at ISO-400 to ISO-800, with many exposures/hours per object.

Bloody hell, now Les tells me that the ISO only goes to 1600, which is what my 450D does. It said 3200 in the stats ..... tho realise that can be expandable. :sadeyes:

If I had my druthers Liz, I'd have rather have bought the 40d than the 550d. Good buying. You'll be very very happy with it I'm sure.

Liz, if you already have a 450D, none of the cameras mentioned are going to offer much of a step up in low light performance and as JJJ points out many of them fall to pieces in high ambient temps.

If you're looking to do serious landscape night work without a tracking mount then you're really in to the realm of the 5DII ($$$) or similar and fast lenses to gain much on the 450D
My suggestion is make the most of the 450D you have and perhaps put your money in to fast lenses; a budget of $500 would just about buy a Tamron 90mm F2.8 and a 50mm f1.8; one stop faster in a lens is equivalent to doubling your ISO.
