Hi all, does anyone own an Asus Tranformer tablet? I am thinking of getting one as it seems a right netbook/ipad combo, plus it runs Android.
The only limitation is the 16 or 32GB HDD, but it has a USB port plus SD card expansion slots.
I mainly want it as a ipad, but will do some net surfing, emails etc and the ipad is just too radical for my typing fingers, plus the auto correct feature is a real pain.
Any input/insight will be much appreciated.
Bo

Hi Traveller,

Sorry I don't have any of these Tablets but something from your post got me thinking. Apple have done it again when ipod came out it became the generic name almost for all media players. No the same seems to be happening with tablets. It seems to me that Apple lead the way and then the rest of the makes come along. The ipad does have a usb port to connect any apple keyboard so I personally don't see the problem I have tried the ipad that a mate has and I could not fault it at all.

And after a quick search on google I found that it can be turned off.

Hi Bo,

I got myself the Transformer for Christmas and my wife has had an iPad (original) for a while now.

I went with an Android tablet as I wanted to see for myself what the differences were and I like to tinker.

Firstly, don't think of either of them as netbooks. They are tablets and are by design different to your regular PC/Laptop.

The following is just my opinion.
The iPad:
Overall a more polished product than Andoid. The touch screen is more accurate than the Transformer. Typing on the iPad is a bit easier than the Transformer (without keyboard). It has a large range of apps to suite all tastes and requirements. Astro apps are particularly good.
On the bad side I have a personal dislike for iTunes and the way you have to use it to transfer info to the iPad. Yes, you can now use iCloud but being in IT I don't trust any cloud.

The Transformer:
With the dock/keyboard attached typing is easier, but I would not use either device for any serious word processing. Yes it has a USB port in the dock, but I see it as a convenient way to transfer files not a source of extra storage. Unless you have a very large music collection and must have it all loaded 32Gb should be plenty of space.
On the apps side you can now get Sky Safari, for me that's all that matters :). Transfer of files from PC to Transformer is easy, just plug it in and it appears to the PC as any other USB drive.

For email and surfing both do the job.

iPad keyboards - there are a plethora of solutions that are every bit as useful as the real thing because that's what they are! :)

There is the Apple-brand keyboard dock, which I use to perform quite complex word processing. I produce newsletters and brochures with it on my iPad using Apple's Pages app. This is a great keyboard because it supports iPad-specific keys. The iPad is kept in portrait mode too - which is perfect for word processing.

Then.... most standard Bluetooth keyboards work with it just fine saw well.

Regarding your comment on iCloud, I too would not use this, but, for a very different reason. When using iCloud, you better make sure you have lots and lots of download data allowance. Every time it downloads, it uses up data, so that when you take a photo, it loads it to all iCloud devices. Great idea, if you can afford the extra data costs, which I can't.

Thanks everyone. My wife uses the EPC notebook, mainly for MS office work (word, excel and PowerPoint) as well as net surfing etc. but she wants to upgrade.
I guess there are plenty of android apps that are MS compatible?
I do have a 15" laptop, but she finds it too big.
Thanks again.

... and iOS apps.
