Hi all,
I took my new DSLR out and condcucted an imaging run, what I found is that my ngc 2070 is Cyan in colour, as oppose to all others I have seen that appear pink in colour. What can I do to fix this or better still prevent this in the future? Bearing in mind that the camera is a 7d and Julie would kill me if I modded it. Attached is the problematic 2070.

Cheers,

Trent

That is a normal response from an un-modded camera, it is picking up O111 emissions, the built in filter blocks quite a high degree of Ha emissions so the the cyan of O111 overpowers the red of the Ha.

Thanks for that John,
I assume nothing can be done post processing? Seems like a waste

Hey guys,

It's not a waste!

You just have to concentrate your efforts on objects which emit less in hydrogen alpha.

Go for reflection nebulae like the Pleiades.

Otherwise, pick up a dirt cheap 40D, and, get it modified (or, pick up an already modified one).

I will admit, the lack of hydrogen alpha does get a bit boring after a while, as you get used to seeing everyone's pink images.

It's almost like a rite of passage.

Happy New Year, to you both!

H

Hi Trent

Like H says, not a waste, been quite a while since I had anything to do with an un-modded DSLR but I seem to remember having to do a lot of mucking around with colour balancing, you just have to watch you don't effect your stars.

I actually concentrated on Star Clusters where the lack of Ha had no real effect.

A lot has been said over the years about different colors coming from different camera's modded and otherwise.

And although some colors certainly look better, I feel we are blessed that we are able to capture these wonderful objects at all.

Top shot Trent, Green, Blue, Red, or whatever.
