Hi
The clouds cleared in Sydney last night so I got in 40mins of M46. Also tried out the new Astronomik CLS CCD filter and the field flattener on the ED80

Not sure if the stars in the cluster should be as blue as this or if this is an artefact of the new filter.

Happy with the flattener though.

This is a pretty low res image. Comments welcome

PS: Looks to also be a small PN (Very faint) to the right of the main PN and close to the centre of the field. Anys clues on what it is?

Thanks
Dan

That will be PN NGC2438.

Nice M46 probably a bit to blue and IMO need more red in the PN but well done

Messier 46 (also known as M 46 or NGC 2437) is an open cluster in the constellation of Puppis. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771. Dreyer described it as "very bright, very rich, very large." M46 is about 5,500 light-years away with an estimated age on the order of several 100 million years. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 appears to lie within the cluster near its northern edge but it is most likely unrelated since it does not share the cluster's radial velocity.

Very nice Dan. Memories of first light with the FS102 Tak I once owned. Nice cluster and the PN just gives it a lift.

Thanks guys

Yes - its an interesting subject. Visually as well

Yes - Different to your M46. I'm puzzled by the blue tinge in the stars. Most likely the filter but Im not sure how to adjust it?

I left the PN pretty much as it came and I really should look these details up myself as it makes the subject more interesting - Thanks

Good close up Jen. Is this a crop off a larger field?

David
There is another PN in the field. I've circled it here. Its Minkowski 1-18. Very small and faint at mag 14
