View Full Version here: : Humayun on the Beach

Humayun and I went to our favourite beach the other night in an attempt to capture comet Lovejoy, as seems the fashion. As we sat in our cave, evading the downpour outside, we almost resigned ourselves to the mission being indeed impossible.
What we didn't bank on was the truly spectacular light during sunrise only an hour later.
Here is Humayun standing on the beach in front of me, leaning over his new Mamiya medium format camera while the storm raged over the ocean. Not bad light, eh? :)

Absolutely stunning!
Would have been better without me in it, though. :)
What an incredible sunrise that was. :eyepop:
Cheers, mate, and Merry Christmas.

Sensational shots and light. And rewarded with the comet, too. Awesome!

Brilliant!!!....:)
The Hman gives it the "rugged" touch :):P
Just noticed, you have the comet :)

Thanks Troy & Carl :) YEs, the comet was there for us, but briefly. In fact, I don't think that it was ever clear of thin cloud - but the camera seems to have seen through it to give me a rather dull comet. Better than nothing I guess. Can't wait to see Humayun's from last night (XMas eve) - he went back again :)

Hopefully you'll get some clearer skies to get a good shot of it.
Great shots Chris, now although I quite like H, yea i do, I reckon the one without him in it is my favorite, sorry.

Thanks Leon & Phil. The sand there is particularly richly coloured, almost like soil. Quite incredible :)

Oh Wow. You said the light was good, but that exceeded my expectations.
H!!! Get yer head OUT of the back of that camera and look UP.

LOL.. Thanks Nettie :)
I know why he was looking down the whole time - he was looking into that gorgeous viewfinder on the Mamiya. The viewfinder image is nothing like a DSLR gives you. It's massive, bright and almost 3-dimensional. Beautiful, and I must get one one day.

Is this before or after the Lytro?

And, at f/3.5 through the viewfinder, the depth of field is so thin, that it's almost unbelievable; things look like 3D models.
Will get some nice black and white film, as well as some Astia, and we'll do some portraits. :)

You mean Imogen, Carl? :)
We're soon going to have an opportunity to shoot the daughter of a friend of mine who does some part-time modelling - in addition to racing high-powered drag cars. :) Should be fantastic! Can't wait. Should be a meaningful exercise in indoor lighting and flash placement/management.

Thanks Mish, Frank, Marc & Chris. Much appreciated.
CHris - yes, the sand is a really deep honey into red colour. It's beautiful under low light.

WOW, check out that light, I'm jealous! I just love when it rains over the ocean, all that misty rain lit up by early morning light :)
And check out H and his Mamiya! :D
Nothing better than standing on the beach, embracing the dawning of a new day, head bent over a camera and capturing the sun rising, feeling calm but rushed to get that perfect moment captured before the light changes!
Looks like you two had a great morning :)

Thank you Shelley :) Yes, the light was exceptional that morning. I've never seen Humayun quite so agitated as he was when the Mamiya wasn't behaving as the sun appeared over the horizon.
