Jupiter December 6th 2011

Hi All,

Imaged Jupiter last night in reasonable seeing but quite variable transparency due to cloud moving through.

Noticed a tiny bright spot on the Nth edge of the SEB and a little toward the following limb, in my RGB from 13:00 UTC.

Have measured the spot in WinJUPOS to be at approx, CMI 245.7 degrees & Latitude -5.8 degrees.

Have attached 2 RGB & 3 807nm IR data sets.

Very nice images Trevor. Interesting spot. There were some similar things noted on CN a while back, particularly obvious on a Pic du Midi image from memory, but I think they were on the equatorial edge of the NEB - any idea what these things are? Regards Ray

Good images, and thanks for pointing out the spot. I think it is also just visible on your 12:49 image as well, but very indistinct. Interesting that it is not visible at all in the IR images, but I do not know enough about Jupiter to know what this means.

I have (one of?) the Pic du Midi image(s) I think Ray is referring to, and yes, it does have a spot of similar size and appearance, on the south edge of the NEB.

John Rogers got back to me this morning and I have included part of his reply as a quote
"Congrats on recording such a tiny bright spot! I suspect it is just a transient aspect of one of the usual SEBn features, as big sudden outbreaks have not been recorded in that latitude before, but further obs'ns will tell..."

As John has said further observations will tell the story.

Good news Kev, reckon Steve will make good use of the LB, he seems very keen.

Received an email regarding the presentation I did up at the hospital, the junior medical staff spend 12 week rotations out here and they want me to give astro presentations to each group through 2012.
