I just made a comparison bewteen what a 30min exposure got me back in 1984 compared to what 30min (10min each R G B) gets me today
Orion Nebula 1984 V 2011 (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/140147438/original)
That B&W photo was very exciting in 1984 and was even part of an award winning display....funny how things improve, man if someone had shown me my 2011 version back in 1984 I would have fallen of my chair :)
Also put up the Luminance only (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/140146737/original) version of the latest data

Great comparison Mike. Wonder what the next 27 years will bring us?
Love that Lum version - should be titled 'Holy Smoke'.
Beautiful stuff.

It's cool to reminisce to appreciate how good it is now :)
The B&W M42 is a scan of an old slifghtly travelled print so it did suffer somewhat.

Wow, great comparo Mike!
Love Bert's gif too, its like the details are being teased out in front of you.
Having a closer look at the film shot Mike, it's incredible just how much detail you did get back then, especially on the cloud details on the "bell" shape of the nebula.....interesting to see the "grain" of the film too!
Very entertaining experiment and presentation, great idea!

I must drag out some of my early images too. Just for comparison. The comparison is like chalk and cheese. So much difference from all those years ago.
Re the Luminence, don't forget to respect the light there mate.;)

Nice comparison Mike. I remember your cold camera shots and I was considering getting a cold camera myself at the time. And then along came hypered film.

Awesome comparison!!! What struck me most was the number of years you have been doing this for Mike!!!!
27 years!!!!!!!!!! That is a lot of years!!!
No wonder why all your shots look so good!!
Keep them coming :)

That's very impressive.
I've wondered how much things have changed - I have an old Patrick Moore 'Atlas of the Universe' and some of my pics are better than the ones in there. And I can hardly call myself an expert - I am barely out of photographic diapers!

It was twenty seven years in the making, should be a classic!

There's a bit of image quality loss in the Giff construction but the general idea is still pretty clear :)

 And it is against the exposure law to depict me in either picture or print ;)

Nice comparison Mike, appreciate it. Brings back memories, back in the 1980's I was using hypered Konica 1600 and 3200 ISO film, with enlarger, anyliser, print processing drums, motorised rollers and chemicals that had to be kept at a pre-determined temperature.
Gee, we get it easy now don't we?
If I knew how to scan my old photos I could up load them also.
All the best.

Hi Mike
A very interesting comparison and it certainly shows how technology has helped advanced the quality of images over the years

That really is amazing.
I never would have believed it possible when I bought my C8 about 21 years ago that such imagery would be possible.
I certainly never would have believed that my venerable C8 could capture an image like this with just six 20 second exposures.
http://www.hyperstarimaging.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=174
I would have said it was categorically impossible to get that level of colour and detail with just 2 minutes of data in average seeing with an 8" scope.
Nowhere near as nice as your image, but shows how far the tech has come.

That is an amazing comparison Mike, and what an awesome gif Bert, really puts the differences into perspective! I still have a soft spot for the 1984 version, it has a lot of personality. They are both beautiful, well done :)
