View Full Version here: : The day the atmosphere stood still…

Hello,
The spell of good seeing above the skies of Brisbane has produced some incredibly detailed images of sunspots AR1341 & AR1342. I was enthralled by the fleeting moments of wonderful seeing as the occasional short burst of 1024x768 movie frames just “popped” with astonishing clarity on the notebook display.:)
A full aperture solar filter made from Baader astro solar film (Photography 3.8) allowed me to use an exposure of 1/2000 sec, recording at 30fps, further contributing to “freezing” the Earth’s atmosphere, or at least that slender column of air rising above my back garden in Brisbane, at 11:01am AEST on 12th November 2011.;)
With temperatures hovering around 30°C it was hot; the price for my infatuation with the Sun this day was a red neck and peeling shoulders. How we amateur astronomers suffer for our data! :)
Cheers
Dennis
An absolute stunning capture indeed Dennis, yes sometimes there is pain to get results like that, well done.

Oh wow, that is fantastic. You should invest in a Solar Hoodie, mine is the best thing I ever bought, and stops me becoming a redneck ;)

Dennis,
the trick is to do your Solar Imaging at night when it is cooler
Excellent result :)

I can see granulation inside the granulation and those spots split apart with this level of resolution.

Seriously Dennis, I just had another look at this remarkable image and all I can say is this attached photo :D
If you could make it colour it would be a watershed

Hello,
Thanks for all the nice comments – I am still quite stunned that I was able to record this level of detail. It makes me want to go to the Moon where one could image without the deleterious affects of an atmosphere!;)
Juts for interest sakes, here is the best individual frame from the stack. I have processed it using the same workflow as the original stacked image, although I have not been as aggressive, as the data broke down due to it being only a “stack” of one!:)
Cheers

What's really cool though Dennis is the granulation inside the sun spots

Hi Mike
Yes – this is the first time that I have noticed the spots inside the umbra of sunspots. I have seen “light bridges” before, but not this mottling.
Cheers

Thanks for that Dennis. The single frame gives some perspective as to what one needs to see to get such a great final pic.
