Hello all :newbie: im 31m from adelaide i was into astronomy when i was in my teens and now want to get back into it. :D im going to start of again with binos thinking of getting the bushmaster 20x60 super high power binos

Yes, I suspect a lot of us have been down the same path that you appear to be treading; astronomy - girls & cars -> family -> no spare $ or time - kids grow up -> back to astronomy....... sigh!

20X60 binos ...mmmmmmmmm.... I suspect you might find these a bit high powered for hand holding (I find 10X quite high enough magnification). Some other members more experience than I might chip in with more informed comment. Were you planning to use a heavy duty tripod or bino mount?

Also the higher the magnification the more critical bino collimation becomes. This last comment is somewhat biased as, from experience, I appear to be more sensitive than normal to mis-collimated bino's, clearly the L & R sides of my brain have a comms problem :P

thanx for welcome yeah ill be usin a tripod plus the binos wont just be used for astronomy i got a pair of tasco zip 10x50 binos but there buggerd one side is all out of focus other side is fine

Welcome Tigion! On a budget side of best value for money binos we have:

1) 10x50 Celestron UpClose binos for under $70 + postage from centre.net.au. I have tried these first hand and they are great!

2) 15x70 or 20x80T binos from aoe.com.au + sturdy tripod to put them on.

If you want one better, then get the 7x50 or 10x50 HG from aoe.com.au instead of the UpClose, and whatever other large bino you fancy.

If you have lots more money than these cost, then hire a consultant or buy one of the larger Canon IS's. :P ;)

I'd stay away from the Bushmaster pair you mentioned.

Welcome to the Ice In Space Forum,
Its just a suggestion,but you might check out the 20x80s at A.O.E,
BEFORE,you buy the Bushmasters. the price is probably similar to the Bushmasters,and you can almost bet the Quality and level of coatings,are better.
For eg,the 20x80s are broadband FULLY multicoated,I think the Bushmasters are just fully coated,The difference is significant.

yeah ask around the forum, as lots of good deals to be found throug word of mouth. I got a pair of Japanese made Bino's 10x50's with coated lens and good quality glass for just under $85 from Hong Kong. They where posted via DHL and arrived prefect. I have used them for many hours and still I am hapopy with the quality. I'll check the make when I get home again and post them for you.

I've got a pair of 15X70 Celestron's skymasters - great binos and worth considering - if not the brand the size anyway. I can get great sweeps of the Milky Way that leaves you awestruck. They probably fall into the category of 'small giant binos'.

That said, the downfall is that they can become heavy even after a few mins. of viewing. Leaning on a fence or something buys time before you get tired. The same goes for lying on your back.

In the long term I think a tripod is the way to go. But unless you get something sturdy/solid with good damping properties, anything less IMO will be a waste of money and time. That said, GOOD tripods don't come cheap.

I bought a pair of Bushmaster 12x50's and returned them after a week. ( I was told that air bubbles in the glass won't effect the view, and what was I doing using them for astronomy anyway, here buy one of our 60mm refractors instead )
I had a bit of a fight to get my money back.
Go with a reputable brand and buy from an optics dealer, not a camera shop, so you can get good back up service.

ty all for the welcome and advice great news i openend up my tasco binos to see what was wrong and now there fixed and working like they use to and i even got in a veiw last nite before i went to work. so now ill be saving up and getting a new telescope only i dont know what lol ive been looking at all kinds of tips all i want is something that will let me get good veiws of saturn, mars, see some nebulas etc etc and let me take good pics of them ,i have a sony cyber shot dig cam btw

hi muddy astrophotography is something i want to get into but dont have to straight away i more want to be able to see planets and nebulas etc etc my budget is up in the air right now but i do know $500 is my start level
