Hello,

Here is an image of Sunspot AR 1339 taken from our back garden. I spent most of the day dodging the clouds and trying to outsmart the poor low level seeing although the jet stream map indicated that conditions should be superb for Brisbane.

This was the only AVI that produced useful data, mainly due to eyeballing the seeing and pressing record/pause to collect 2000 frames. AVIStack and CS5 did the rest.:)

As usual, a B&W copy for the purists with a false colour version thrown in for the artistically inclined!;)

Cheers

Dennis

Wow Dennis, this makes me want to try solar white light!!! This looks like a huge sunspot group developing and your HiRes image shows light bridges developing in the largest spots. Filaments in the penumbra are so detailed and the granulation is hypnotising. What scope and fl are you using to get these spectacular images? Is it the Mewlon 180?

John.

Superb Dennis was hoping you'd get a pic.Do you find AVIstack does a better job than Registax?

Thanks John and Derek – this one almost got away from me. I spent most of the morning trying to dodge this pesky blanket of cloud that has been hanging around Brisbane this past few days, in spite of the local weather channels promising clear skies….:sadeyes:

The jet stream conditions looked ideal and I was able to get some excellent periods of seeing during the night in between sets of clouds, but by comparison, the daytime conditions have been atrocious.:(

I deleted all but one AVI from a frustrating day’s efforts - AVIStack managed to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse from my single keeper.:)

The ‘scope is the Mewlon 180 F12 with Tak x1.6 Extender (Barlow) operating at F19.2 (3456mm efl). The OTA reaches ambient quite quickly and I use a full aperture solar filter made from Baader astro solar film, the photographic density that allows exposure settings of 1/2000 sec, 30fps, and Gain approx 300.

In my experience, AVIStack seems to process all the detail across the whole frame more evenly compared to my efforts with Registax 4 & 5 only. I also like the batch mode with default settings in AVIStack v2.0.

Cheers

Thanks Ted and Mike – it was a challenging day as I also had the “runs” and needed to scoot off indoors, frequently. Ah, the dedication of the man eh!;)
