I quite like #1 - nice composition and portrayal of the weevil. Is this a crop, or were you shooting at 2:1 etc? Nothing wrong with #2 either. #3 - just missed focus on the eyes, but interesting composition. Again, was this a crop or taken at higher magnifications? I find doli's buggers when it comes to flash as they tend to take off with the pre flash and voila, no fly in shot for main flash.

Dave, I am really pushing the 100mm macro to it's limits in many cases. The doli fly is super sharp as a full-frame image, but this is a very heavy crop.
The Weevil was quite large so there was no issue there even at minimum focus distance. Not a heavy crop on that or the spider, just a trim of the edges is all.
I quite often don't even bother with some of the smaller insects any more as they really need something like the MPE65 to do them justice. I am wasting too much of the frame and losing resolution by cropping for these tiny fellows.
I've never had a problem with the flash scaring insects off. Some red-bellied black snakes I shot last year had a bit of a jump when it went off though. I was only inches away from three of them.
Thanks Troy!

I reckon you're at the point where you could get some Kenko extension tubes and have a go at higher magnifications.

Yup. That could be on the cards too.
Can't think of that right now. I just got my 100-400 in the mail this afternoon........

Awesome! Have fun :)
PS - tubes "only" cost around $120 last time I checked. Much less than 100-400L!

Thanks mate. I've been scrimping and saving gold and even silver coins for MONTHS to afford this! I just refused to take out another loan. It's all mine baby! :nerd::rundog:
I'll look into extension tubes. :D

Great shots. Love the weevil shot - it looks positively evil. The lighting on the spider is great - I really like the soft golden glow effect.

+1 for the Weevil as favourite, they're a dapper looking bug, I've not seen a yellow one before

Agreed. Much can be done with tubes/dedicated macro lens (around 2:1) or even tubes + TCs + 50mm ;-)
