I love it!
I did hear of someone who was suckered into the Microsoft Help Desk scam because the scammers phoned just as she was having trouble with her PC - she thought they were her angels and gladly coughed up $200. Eventually the penny dropped and she rang Microsoft who told her to unplug the computer ASAP. Her bank was also able to cancel the credit card transaction as it was still in a "clearance stage".

Pete,
I've mentioned this site many, many times: www.419eater.com
Go to the forums and the general scambaiting section. Prepare to laugh your rear end off.
I haven't had much time in recent history to engage in the shenanigans, but, for a while, scambaiting was my favourite pasttime.

It is unbelievable to think that scammers scam approximately $70 million from Australians annually. It is estimated that 5% of the Australian population have been victims of scams annually. Although some scams are quite sophisticated, I find it hard to believe that people still fall for this. It is mentioned in newspapers, online, on current affairs shows and the news regularly, so why are people still falling victim to this?
On 60 Minutes on Sunday night they interviewed a woman who got caught up in a love scam; she handed over $300,000 :eyepop: to someone she never even met, or had no idea who it was; friggin' unbelievable. :( And she seemed an intelligent woman, no less.
Yes, I know there are many lonely people out there looking for love, I am one of them, but I ain't that gullible. :P
I do not give out my details to anyone, without knowing who they are and why they need it. I have always shred anything with personal details on, included bills, as I have never thrown anything out in the trash. Many years ago some of my friends thought I was paranoid. It is one of the few times I have been right.
It is a very old adage that "if it seems to good to be true, it usually is". Does no-one heed the old adages anymore
Dr. John Bridges' Defence of the Government of the Church of England, 1587: said that "a fool and his money is soon parted". So, fools must still abound

I had about 9 scam emails today of different sorts to 3 differnet email accounts. This is more than usual. Many were for ANZ banking when I dont have an ANZ account.
Not sure why the number has increased.

I have noticed an increase of late. I was reporting them to the Dept Fair Trading at one stage, but got tired of that.
Sometimes I'll email abuse to them, other times I'll play up to it.
Mostly I just delete.

Don't ever reply to them, jJjjJJ.
When you reply to them, it confirms that you exist.
There is a /lot/ of money, and, I mean, a /lot/, in selling legitimate email lists. That's how these scammers operate. They have an oga (head scammer/boss) who sells mugus (scammers) mailing lists and then shares the profits of the mugu's scamming.

 It truly amazes me that people think that a company is just going to give away millions without any input. :P Last I heard lottery winnings are based on how much is spent. :confused2:
I sure would love to find someone that wants to just give me lots of money (for real). I could then go buy a new telescope. Like that's ever going to happen

I got the most incredible spam via my work email address about a fortnight ago. The email was addressed to other Michelles, with very similar (if not the same) surnames to mine. The best bit was that they had managed to cc: email addresses for 3 out of my last 4 jobs in amongst the other random names.... I can only conclude that my perma-out-of-office replies once I'd left the jobs made them think they'd hit a winner, and add me to their lists. Eerie though, to think about the trail of email addresses still lurking after I've left jobs!!!!

I get these emails every day.
It is because my email address is out there on the net as a contact for the SVAA website, SV camps, and the SVAA shop.
I get about 10 per day on average and they are usually the same ones Adrian mentioned (ANZ/PayPal/CBA/St George), plus I also get them from Nigerian Govt, UK Lottery, Telstra, and the list goes on.
But the ones that REALLY gripe me are the ones saying they are Cancer victims in their last few weeks of life and want to give all their money (usually in the $millions) to me, their missing distant relative (even though they don't even know my name).
But today I recieved a new one.
It was saying that my ATM card has already been credited US$6.8 million. :eyepop:
Then it was followed up with the usual dribble:
The ATM Card Value is $6.8MILLION USD. Please Contact secretary Martha Ozioma {marthaoziomaatmcard@yahoo.com.hk} With the following details for processing:
*Full Name:
*Delivery Address:
*Gender:
*Occupation:
*Phone Number:
*Country:
*Means Of Identification:
then also ended with:
Note: You are required to effect delivery fee of $80
They keep coming up with new ideas! This time the megabucks was already in my bank account!
Yeah, riiiiiiiiiiight

Here's another one that just came in while I was posting in here:
This is to notify you again that you were listed as a beneficiary to the total sum of Seven million four hundred thousand British pounds in the codicil and last testament of the deceased. (Name now withheld for confidential reasons).
You are qualified to be listed as a sole beneficiary and therefore can present you as the beneficiary to the inheritance.
We therefore reckoned that you can receive these funds as you are qualified by your surname identity.
Kindly forward to us your letter of acceptance; your current telephone and fax numbers and a forwarding address to enable us file necessary documents at our high court probate division for the release of this sum of money to you as the sole beneficiary.
Yours Faithfully,
Personal Manager.
Barclays Bank
Note that my name is not mentioned in the email, the sender gives no name, "you are qualified by your surname identity" which isn't in the email, and the need to know my phone numbers and address.
When I get up in the morning there will be a few more to start the day. And on it goes

Hi,
There was a clever one in my email the other day, it was purporting to be from Fedex, trying to deliver a parcel. It was well worded, with no obvious silliness.
It said I was not at home when they called (and I had in fact been out), and that the attachment should be printed out and taken to the local Post Office for pickup.
Indeed I was at that time expecting a parcel to arrive, and did not know exactly which carrier the sender was using.
Ooooh, sneaky. By why was Fedex using Australia Post, hmmm? So I scanned the attachment, and sure enough, a Trojan virus.
Cheers

They are such fun ain't they. Used to do the scambaiting as well with 419eater but got too tedious and time consuming. If you want to send a reply back just setup one of those throwaway email address, Gmail or there are some which have a life of a week or so and flick the baiter mail to that and go from there.
I used to send them huge attachments, large files of rubbish, old DLLs when they asked for pictures, filled out forms, Western Union, passport details etc. Kept them running around trying to decipher the male bovine excrement. And keep resending to fill up their mailboxes. Just to annoy them.
Still got a few remote email accounts out there that are designed to attract the mugu boys. Check on them now and then to see what's happening.
But Astronomy took over so there is no money for the mugus to scam from me now ... I can't afford to pay their 'fees'

My Dear Ric,
Thankyou for your kind regards. It has been a difficult time as two weeks ago, I was hospitalised for a full frontal lobotomy. I have now returned home and have been advised that the terrorists who killed my parents have kidnapped my brother and have also set up a trust fund for me. Our Nigerian laws do not permit me to access it directly, so in return for your sending me 4.82 billion British Pounds Sterling, I can give you approximately $3.75 as a handling fee in return for your kind and generous time. Please, hurry, as if I have not recieved these funds by Tuesday evening, my brother will be sold to elephant hunters

One way you can protect your email address on a website is to create a jpg of the address and put this onto the site. People can't click on it, but at least they know exactly what to type, my address from my website has never received spam in more than 4 years. You can obfiscate it with "Fred at mysite dot com" but some people just can't work that out!

The biggest scammers of all are Governments. A licence that cost $15 annually, five years ago is now $65 annually. :eyepop: That's approximately a 30% annual increase, whereas inflation is running at less than 3% anually, which would make it approximately $20. How can they justify this. Easy, they don't. Biggest scammers in the world.
