I noticed that google.com.au have a tribute to the CSIRO Parkes radio telescope 50th anniversary today. Nice to see some astronomy recognition!

It's fantastic.

John Sarkissian's talk at IISAC2011 about the 50th Anniversary was simply fantastic. So much history, so many important discoveries and important roles in space exploration.

So impressive.

Love how the dishes and stars spell "Google"

Took me a few seconds to get it...it is Monday after all.

Awesome :)

My dad and I went up to Parkes the other weekend for the open day... a very enjoyable weekend.

It was great to see after John's talk.

When John opened his laptop on Saturday afternoon the first thing I noticed was
the background image of himself standing next to Neil Armstrong! Now I knew
John had met Buzz before and when I asked about this brush with fame, he
said it was taken when Armstrong visited Sydney in August. In the presentation
John gave he had another picture of he and Armstrong during the official handover
of the restored Apollo 11 moonwalk video.

John also had copies of the restored video on sale. I watched some of it last night to
try and re-live the moment. There is a URL on the back of the DVD case where
I guess they will go on sale but a quick check reveals the domain is parked
and not yet active. If we hear of where the DVD can be purchased online I will
post a thread here on IIS.

Yep, I got a nice surprise, too, at work when I opened the browser this morning (Google is the homepage on the office computer). A lovely tribute.

Bother. We didn't have an October 31. It disappeared by while we were flying over the Pacific coming home.
