First efforts with Canon 1100D

Hi,
Here's my first efforts with the Canon 1100D, using 70 to 300mm zoom at 300.
NGC 253 is six frames, four at one minute and two at two minutes.
Processed using registax and photoshop 7.
The moon image is at 300mm taken in sports mode.

Hi Justin,
Nice first shots. I have found with moon shots, it is best to forget about any of the set modes and go fully manual, unless you are sure that the camera is just exposure metering (spot metering) on the moon. Otherwise the camera will try to properly expose the entire scene, meaning it will do a longer exposure to try and expose the black background which leads to an overexposed moon. Moon shots typically need to be underexposed to properly expose the moon. Put the camera in M (manual mode). Set your ISO to 100 or 200. Set the aperture to around 8 or so. Turn on live view (i'm pretty sure the 1100D has it as it was on my first camera the 1000D), point at the moon and dial in a shutter speed until the moon looks properly exposed (what this shutter speed is depends on how bright the moon is). Then manually focus on the moon using the magnified live view. Set the shutter on a ten second delay and press the shutter button. Look at the results- adjust shutter speed if needed. Thats the beauty of digital- you can just delete any test shots. Once you get comfortable with M, Av and Tv modes you will never go back to the otherside of the dial. You get so much more control.

Thanks for the input, it's a steep learning curve and any help is apprecated.
One aspect I find very good with the 1100D is the computer control sofware. It's very easy to use, took alot less time to get used to than my CCD software.

Nice going Justin, , Cool 253, yep. The sports mode with the moon has brought out the earthshine well, just a little shake noticeable, as said, the 10 sec delay should reduce most of it !
