Has any one else seen the movie ' Sky line ' ? its about alien's taking over Los Angeles. ;)
Any way the heros are in the penthouse of a hotel and their host has an awsome Atlas mounted ED 120mm EOS, that they use to keep an eye on the bad aliens , not a bad flick , but that scope is really nice and it gives perfect views thru a closed window .. cool ?
I just wonder how many people see this kind of thing and try to observe thru the closed windows ? And come away thinking astronomy sux, Quite a few I would think ?

Hi Brian,
Yeah, seen Skyline. Wasn't a bad movie and I will add it to my extensive Sci-Fi DVD collection, when I see it cheap. :P These types of alien movies are becoming more common, i.e, District 9 and the Battle for Los Angeles. District 9 was really good for a low budget movie.
Battle of Los Angeles, on the other hand, was just another excuse for a war movie with a tentative link to aliens. And not a good war movie at that! I thought it was crap and overdone.
Cheers Peter

I knew someone that used to use an astro telescope for looking at ocean views through a closed window. They forgot to remove it or cover the objective, and as a result, it caused the curtains to catch fire, as the Sun was setting, it passed throught the field of view. Lucky they didn't burn the house down.

:eyepop:Ouch ! Peter , very lucky indeed .
That remindes me of a public night a few years ago in NZ when a young man was directed to me by other members as he could not get the scope to focus , I had a look and ...Well? the instructions did not state that the clear plastic cap had to be removed first !:D
The look of joy on his face when he saw the moon first time was priceless..
It turned out to be a good scope , an eq2 moiunted Celestron 70mm refractor.
I liked District 9 as well .
Brian.

Doh! :D That look would have been priceless! But, I did the same thing with my first SLR camera. Couldn't understand why I couldn't see anything in the finder. Yep, forgot to take the cap off :P :D

Oh and by the way. The director of District 9 is doing another sci-fi movie "Elysium" which is due out in 2013. Hope it is as good as District 9.

Skyline would have to be one of the all time worst movies I have ever seen in the sci-fi genre.(and I have a massive collection). They spent their entire budget on sfx, none on story, plot, characters, or acting lessons.
Total and utter intelligence-insulting garbage. I went on opening night with two cousins and went home thinking we should have spent the money on pizza instead. When I got home and looked in the mirror, there was the word, "Sucker" tattooed on my forehead.

I didn't think it was that bad, but then, I didn't pay to see it. :) I do know how you feel though, Bloodhound, for I felt the same way about the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. A total waste of 3 hours that I will never get back; and I like just about anything sci-fi :D
I quite liked it, and we have spoke before about it on IIS, but didnt like District 9.

What is Everyones favourite Sci-Fi movie? What is your worst?
We all like different things and what one finds good others don't. But then, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing.

Hi Brian,
Watched Immortality last night. Interesting mix of comic, CGI and live action. Complex story, but I enjoyed it. :) I also liked the sign that had a nod to astronomy. Just before Jill went into the bar where she met Nikopol, there was a sign with the name Tycho Brahe.
Good movie, if a little different. In fact, I don't think I have seen a film quite like this since Dark City.
brian nordstrom
02-11-2011, 09:05 PM
:eyepop:Sweet Peter , I had a feeling you would like it , There is a problem ,,,,??? when you read this reply ,
As I will tell you now , is that you wont be able to stop thinking about 'Nikapol', 'Jill' the hunters ( you now know the . "you have a box in your brain" , I want it ! now , and if you dont give it to me I will have to go in and get it ')
Dude , aint he a beauty ?
Bugger having that pinko on your case?
My favorite part is .. well ...the whole movie is really food for thought , thats why I have a copy.
Hope you watch it again as its a complex movie , and the gods? do we really need them , ?
I liked this when the gods were in there pyramid ... " are you cheeting? ,, I am enubis , i am ,, as they were playing Monalopy ,,, cool !. Food for thought all right mate.
or at the start those cops in the 2095 helicopter ,,, "It's a naked guy with a birds head !!! "
One to beat Peter

But I like the acting , the actors made this movie , and really enjoyed them selves , You can see it in there ... Fun , Acting? .

All sci-fi is good :P Just some are better than others.
And yes, I will add Immortality to my collection, when I find it. Sci-Fi accounts for about 240 titles in my collection and counting.
As for french films, I have a few of those in my collection. The French make good films. I have a good thriller called Nest. It is a conflagration of events coming together for some explosive action. :eyepop:
But, my favourite French film is Crimson Rivers. It is a psycho thriller with a killer of a twist at the end. I also love Psychological Thrillers.
Frankly, I just love all sorts of movies. :P

My absolute favourite is Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I have it on Bluray, it's awesome. On this theme, the series Taken would have to be next. It's Close Encounters on steriods! :D I just wish they would bring that out on Bluray. The alien recording device is just awesome and the 'super b***h' it was just delightful..I'm in love :P
My next all time favourite is, dare I say it, Firefly and the movie Serenity. It was a much unrated show...Cowboys in Space :P Doesn't get much better than that. I just watch it over and over; definitely left wanting more.
My observatory is called Serenity! What a nerd, hey :2thumbs:

:hi: Watched Transformers - Dark of the Moon last night. My thoughts? The first Transformers movie was great, the second, ok....the third, less than ok. Hope they don't make a 4th, as it will probably be really bad
Although I am glad I watched it, as it is definitely worth watching, at least once, but, I wouldn't add it to my collection, as I wouldn't want to watch it again.
I thought some of the dialogue was terrible and it a few place it was well and truly over-acted and farcical. Furthermore the humour appeared to be too forced and in some places rather corny and just plain stupid. I liked the humour of the first Transformers the best, after that, it went downhill
However, its redeeming feature is that the special effects were friggin' awesome, in places. Some of the SFX I hadn't seen done like this before. In some respects, I think they had decided on the SFX first, and then added the story and dialogue later. :screwy:
This movie had the potential to be a great movie, but because of the corny and stupid humour, I think Michael Bay seems to have missed the boat on this one.
Cheers :)

 thanks ,
But mate it cant be as bad  as what I watched last night ,
'battle OF los angelese'
Not, ' battle Los Angeles'
I only got it out for a look and what a waste of space!
Corny with SFX thats so amaturish .
The only saving grace was...
I also got ' Little Johnny the Movie ' and watched it after , Funny as !
Kevin Bloody Wilson is little Johnny's uncle .
Get it if you want a good laugh.

:hi: Yes, EV is a deep movie. Tonight's movie is even deeper, "Knowing". If you haven't seen this one it has a great twist at the end. It is Nicholas Cage's best movie to date. :) Tomorrow night I am going to watch an oldie.....Quatermass, a three part BBC series with John Mills. I haven't watched in a long time. It was creepy the first time I watched it. I picked the Quatermass box set, with the earlier B&W Quatermass Experiment etc, up about a year ago, at a second hand place. :)
brian nordstrom
15-11-2011, 08:42 PM
:) I liked 'Knowing' as well pretty heavy duty .. A hard cross to bear ...
Have you seen Nick Cages latest?
' Driven ' ?
It got me , it aint what you think .
Its a lot on the parallell universe theme , ,, I will say no more .
I enjojed it and if you aint seen it Peter , I think you will too .
Nicholas at his 'sad coolest' , that he is good at, yea 'Driven' .
Ahh ! Quartermass , I used to live for friday nights as a kid to watch that . The TV was mine for 1 hour.
Yes 'Alan Quartermass' was his name ? I have not seen or heard that name since I was a teenager growing up in NZ , loved it!
Thanks for the memories .:hi: I loved it , as well as the 'Land of the Giants' .:)
Cool . SIFI .

Good to know that someone else knows Quatermass. It is such a great show, even if it is a bit dated. :D
No sci-fi tonight! We have clear skies :D

:DGlad to hear Peter , on the Quatermass ,
I grew up with 1 older sister and 2 older brothers , them me , and 4 younger sisters so tv time was at the premium around our place back when I grew up  .
B&W TV's back then ,
The only reason I got to watch it ,was because it was a after 'Corronation Street ' on friday nights and none of my brothers and sisters were around at that time , and The tv was mine , for 1 hour ,the starting of a love of SIFI . OH Yea! ;)
Dated ? , WHAT! , My favorite movie is 'Forbidden Planet' , dont forget .
Quality SIFI never dates .

19-11-2011, 10:02 AM
:thumbsup:Well I watched the Aussie version and Peter , its a shambles!. they have cut at least 20 miniutes from the front of the movie , the parts that explain the rest of it ! And being a complex story this just wrecks  the whole thing! What a shame? some people have no idea !
Then about 1/2 way thru the section where the princess explains here family ,eg the Emporour and his dealings is all over the place ? total confusion !:confused2:.
This copy does no justice to the book and I think who ever cut this needs to liik for another JOB!! .
What a shame! This does not help the SIFI gnere one bit.:mad2:
Not happy , the Kiwi version is heaps better .
Oh well it looks good in my collection ?

I especially liked the few refrences to the old Star Trek movies .
;) And its sience was pretty poor , eg. the crashed transformer ship was on the dark side of the moon ? right ? but the earth !!! was in the moons sky from it ? Pretty ,,, but , POOR .
And also another magical telescope that gives a perfect image thru a closed window .. He he .
SFX made up for it .
