transporting heavy batteries

I got my Century 100AH battery- it's a heavy sucker! At the same time I bought a plastic trolley on wheels to move it, cost me me a whole ten bucks! Explains why it disintegrated coming down the drive on the first trip out!
Any tips on getting something more substantial?

Hi Graham

Bunnings will be your friend on this one. I have a courier type trolley, the one that can be used upright or horizontally. I have it permanently loaded with my 3 battery packs, accessory cases, laptop hutch etc. Wheel it out connect my mount up, it is polar aligned already, lift my scopes on, power everything up and away you go. Also handy for loading up the car with camping equipment when things like Ice in Space astro camp are on.

Be careful which trolley you get as I had all sorts of trouble with the hard rubber wheels on mine. They spat their bearings under the weight first use so I went back to Bunnings and bought a 100 odd kg rated wheel - single wheel makes it very manouverable.

It would be wise to acquire a marine battery box and "bolt" in some rugged tie-down points in the boot or back of your 4bie. Those heavy batteries become missiles during a "sudden stop". I say "bolt" not "screw" for obvious reasons. Shorted out 100AHR terminals also make great fire starters too!

BTW when storing the battery at home keep it thermally insulated from concrete floor. Do you have a good quality 3 stage charger?
