It arrived at my doorstep this afternoon!

If you've got a subscription it'll probably arrive today or Monday, and probably at the newsagents during next week.

There's a surprise or 4 in there of interest to forum members.. :D Will reveal more once more people have it in their hands! :poke: :)

Tell me please.... Is my comet shot in there! You can private msg me if you like... :prey:
I'm not sure when we'll get to see S&S in NZ, if at all going by the nil focus of Astronomy at local news agents.
Cheers

I've just come back from the shops. Went to two newsagents to check out S&S but they didn't have it. Grabbed a copy of AS&T though.

So thanks for the shots of the mag Iceman and for risking your livelihood with such a blatant violation of copyright. Great stuff! Now if I could only find a copy of it so I could look at the photos in all their glory.

BTW. Who paid for the ad? (in the first shot)

iceman
12-02-2005, 04:57 PM
I don't expect the mag will be in the newsagents until mid-next-week.. those with subscriptions usually get it a day or two before the full release.

It'll be out next week for sure though.

That's cool isn't it.
Just look at what you've started Iceman... You'll be famous at SPSP! Who needs $5 when this is the sort of company we keep.

I agree, Mike, look what you have produced.
It is neat to be a part of this small, close knit group, all doing their own little bit to help everyone else, and without any of the *****ing that seems to plague other forums.
Long may it continue.
Hats off to you Mike.

Got mine just yesterday so it's probably is in your mail box by now brendan!
Congratulations to all the forum members who got their pics in the gallery! Well done, I was so proud when I saw them :D
The magazine just keeps getting better. I really like the article about the makers of the argo navis, we definitely need to see more articles like that about local astronomy manufacturers and the like.
It's good to see the faces behind the articles too, I really like how they've included each writers pic at the beginning of the article.
All in all, it's going to be a colossal read, the cassini article looks like it's going to be well worth the wait! Enjoy folks :D

Exfso - got my copy from the newsagent at Big W in Cumberland Park today but it was the last one they had. Sorry mate! But that must mean there are copies in Adelaide somwhere.

Well done to everyone that got their pictures published, keep up the good work.

I'm a subscriber, and I only got mine today (16th).

Absolutely fantastic..well done to all our talented astrophotographers. A bench mark has been set for coming editions.

BTW, who's putting in an entry in the astrophotography competition at the Wiruna Star Party? There are great prizes, I am reliably told.

I had a good read through it last night, there's some good stuff in there, it's a good issue.

Both mags are light-on with respect to equipment reviews this time around, hopefully they'll have something in the next issue.

I knew it, I knew it.

All I had to do was open my big mouth and complain and the astronomy gods would turn round and make me look like a spoilt child.

As Silvi and others suggested, my copy was poking out my mail box when i got home last night.

now I have something to do when its cloudy

What is the difference between S&S and AS&T? Obviously they are different magazines. I'm asking about quality and content differences.

silvinator
17-02-2005, 07:18 PM
S&S is 100% local content, run, managed and printed in Australia right here in Sydney. AS&T is only about 40% aussie and NZ content with an australian publisher, still american based though. In terms of quality, both are good but AS&T has more pages but costs more (plus it has more ads). I'm liking the new S&S better than AS&T so far.

PS: I don't believe I've said hello and welcome to you Mig so, Hello and Welcome! :D

Rodstar,
I was keen to put in an entry or two for the Wiruna competition.
Problem is I have so many images, I can't decide which ones to enter.!! I know some of them are crap, but some are probably good enough.
Any ideas? Website is www.star-mate.com/images.htm

Robby

Images must be taken after March 2004, ie last SPSP. Sound like you Mike?

I said to Don from Bintel, if they have a category specifically for non-tracking dob shots, I might have a chance of winning :D

Thanks for the comments .

Glad to see SKY & SPACE has arrived in most shops. One problem we have is that some newsagents only order 2 or 3 copies and they go the first or second day.

When someone comes in and sees it's not there, they assume it didn't come out yet. The best way is to subscribe.

I've just come back from a week around the Central Coast of NSW doing a lot of astro lectures, visiting schools, and holding viewings. One chap I met in Raymond Terrace has a terrific home built observatory (a modified garden shed in fact!) and has made a lot of equipment for his 12' scope..... including a system which talks to him and tells him if he's got the angles right etc!

I'm doing a story on him for an upcoming issue of the mag and want to start featuring amateurs like yourselves over the coming year/s. If you have a good story, and can get some good pics of yourself and your gear as well, then I'd be interested in hearing from you.

I'm looking for things like why you started in astronomy, what equip. you use, your experiences (good and bad), info about yourself, - things like that OK? This will not be a short overview. I'm looking at a feature story.

You can email me for some guidelines, but if replying in full, please keep your details brief - probably 1,000 words or less.. about the size of an A4 sheet. I'll look at the first ones in order as they come in but can't pormise everyone will get a go.. it depends on how interesting your story is.

All the best,

gaa_ian
19-02-2005, 01:48 PM
Good on you Dave ...I'm sure a few of us can come up with a few stories :D
On the S&S front, when is the Mag going to start coming out on a regular basis
Those of us who have been long time subscribers & seen the Mag come & Go & come back again, are pretty dissapointed at an issue being missed again !
While stories like Hyugens on Titan are big news, I dont think it warrants missing an issue for :confuse3:

Dave
21-02-2005, 06:03 AM
Hi gaa_ian

I guess it's a case of damned if you do .. damned if you don't. If we'd have run without including much of the latest Huygens info and pics I'm sure there would have been a cry of "why didn't you wait?"

silvinator
21-02-2005, 01:05 PM
Hi Dave, this issue looks great and I have to say that the cassini/titan article was a great read. Well done. I have a suggestion that might solve the dilemma of whether not you should delay current issues and that is that you make the magazine monthly! Problem solved! Then we don't have to wait so long to get current news. Just a thought :D

Dave
21-02-2005, 03:49 PM
Hi Silvie

Yes, that would solve the problem, and is on the agenda later on, but after such a massive re-structure (such as S & S has just gone through) there are limitations on what can be done immediately. A monthly mag looks good on the surface BUT, you've got to pay for the increased costs, AND survive.

You might get away with it for a short period but the people who own this magazine want to be around for a lot longer.... that's why we're all 'pacing it' until the time is right - even though we cop some flak from time to time about "missing issues' or "late arrivals".

I know it will all even out. Hey, just check out the forum comments from the guys who just had their pics printed. They're stoked. .. and that's what it's all about. Giving these 'little guys' a go. We want to be around to do it all again soooo, easy does it for awhile.

By the way, I'd like to do a profile on a lady amateur astronomer.. ...an 'astronomer-ette' if you will. The gals rarely, if ever, get into an astronomy magazine and I think it would be interesting.

Wanna be in it?

silvinator
21-02-2005, 04:39 PM
Dave, I had a feeling you were going to say that about the monthly thing but I thought I'd bring it up for everyone else that was wondering too. That's understandable that you're all reluctant to take such a risk after such a big overhaul of the magazine. One little step at a time it is then. But I'm glad to hear it is on the agenda. I for one wouldn't mind putting in a bit more monetary support if it meant getting a monthly magazine.

Now about the profile, I would be honoured to be in the magazine. You're right, it's high time we see a few more pretty faces in the mag :D I think it would be very interesting indeed to read about other gals' experiences in the hobby.

And now for my party dance  :party2:

OK Silvie.. you're on - let's do it!

Email me when you are ready, there's no rush, and give me some info on yourself, your gear, etc. and we'll pop you on the front page... errr, maybe just inside OK?

(dave.reneke@skyandspace.com.au)

Thanks ving.. good to keep appearances where and when I can. You guys mean a lot to me because I know how tough it is just being an amateur astronomer and trying to come to grips with all that's happening.
