Last night I tried observing some doubles in Canis Major with my new ED80. It was on an EQ3-2 mount, unmotorised. Canis Major was near the zenith, so the viewing end was at its lowest position (I was actually sitting on the grass).

I struck a hitch. I had a 2 inch diagonal with a 2xBarlow and 22 Panoptic. Too much weight it would seem, as the focuser kept sliding down. I had to take off the barlow, and then it was OK, maybe a little bit of a tendency to move slightly out of focus. Seems there is a limited threshhold to how much weight the ED80 can cope with in that position.

For all those ED80 users out there, is that your experience too, or should I be concerned? :help3:

You may need to lap the focuser. http://finefocuser.com/orionedcrayfordm.html

Can't you up the tension? Mine could take the heavy Stratus + 2" all-metal body long barlow.

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=9915&d=1140869250 I have had a similar position but not quite as much weight, and it hasn't moved. Did you remember to use the locking screw??

Thanks everyone! All comments extremely useful. I have discovered the tension screw, but I will need a stiff scotch before taking to the focuser tube with Arkansis stone!

Yes I once tried one of Louie's Giant Naglers in my ED 80 and it just wouldnt hold..gave up in the end.

Works great with a 300D in there though :)
