Being on the wrong side of 45, I did grow up with songs from the '70's -;) Though my fave era is just into the '80s with the New Wave/Synth (then Goth) styles. Anyway, 5 I can think of are
1. Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
(daylight...)
2. S-S-S Single Bed - Noosha Fox
3. Cars - Gary Numan
4. Fox On The Run - Sweet
5. I Was Made For Lovin' You Baby - Kiss

1: Hotel California, The Eagles
2: Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin (although anything by Led Zeppelin qualifies)
3: Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen (although almost anything by Queen qualifies)
4: Paranoid, Black Sabbath
5: Smoke On The Water, Deep Purple
... but ask me again in ten minutes and I'll have changed my mind. There are just so many great songs from that era to choose from.

Geez, this will take some time, the 70's was the absolute best decade for music.
The 60's were dull, the early 80's were pretty good, the late 80's waned. The 90's were the worst decade for music, very little worth mentioning. No music has been made since then, just product.
First cab off the rank:
Serenade - Steve Miller Band

There's a few of us around, including other astronomers. I bought Hark the Village Wait on spec in '77 (so I was a late starter) and fell in love. I've got most Span albums but only 1 by Maddy (must remedy that!) In a similar vein, if you don't know Pentangle you should.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but Susy's comment made me think of a conversation I just had. I was talking to a student who is in her early 20's about some equipment we could use and said "Oh well, money money money..." and she replied "Must be funny in a rich man's word." I asked how she even knew that line, given that Abba could almost be her grandparents (certainly parents). It turns out that Abba are one of her favourite bands and she finds nothing odd about that, especially as all modern music is 'crap'.
Similarly, I was walking through the foyer the other day and some young blokes were sitting around and one was playing music on his laptop - Ziggy and the Spiders. You still see lots of young blokes sporting Led Zep of Black Sabbath T shirts. Yet in the 70's no one of my generation was listening to Benny Goodman or Glen Miller. It's probably due to the availability of music and the fact that these kids grew up listening to their parents music whereas in my day record players and old records just weren't around. I find it nice but still a bit strange.
TrevorW

I was thinking the same thing just the other day myself and this was much the impetus for me posting this thread
my daughter 22 was playing Bob Marley "No woman, No cry" she was born 1989 and I listen to Marley rarely , he died in 1981
I think this generation appreciate the depth and diversity of music from the 70's as we do
Ausrock

Gotta agree with the last two posts..........my 29yr old son was telling me that he and his lady had been listening to The Shadows "FBI" which she'd found online.............my response was to the effect that I was playing that and other Shadows stuff in my first High School bands back in the '60's.:D
Kevnool
11-10-2011, 06:27 PM
They have to listen to something and it might as well be the 70s because todays music is crap.
Cheers Kev.
Hi David,
My daughter is 21yrs and she says exactly the same thing. She listens to Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin (for her age, go figure,:screwy::lol: she has oodles of those cd's, I am not responsible), Etta James, Santana etc. Even though I've often played Harry Connick Jnr, I think it was more Michael Bubble who introduced her to jazz, and Beyonce did the same in her film based on Etta James life. Her boyfriend, the same. She said to me one day, I will show you how *$#% the music is at the moment and turned on Foxtel to play current hits- sure enough, back to back dance music, with that electronic voice sound - it all sounded the same. Prob. why I haven't gotten much new music myself lately either.
I think many children today are looking for music with a bit of substance, and thank goodness artists come along (such as Bubble & Beyonce as Etta James) to bring back some classic music culture to the young generation.
I don't know how, but I think most children around 20yrs will know many Abba Songs. They just seem to always be there in the background and get a resurgence from time to times with films like Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Dessert etc. I am a huge Abba fan and still have nearly all my memorabilia (minus my cushion and socks- don't know what happened to those.:mad2:) Every so many years, I go through and fold out very carefully my mega abba posters just to see them again and make me smile. :D You used to be able to buy these books, which was actually a poster that folds out- on the back was lots of pics and on the front a huge print.
My daughter and her boyfriend wear their Jimmy Hendrix t-shirts with pride.

My brother was born in 1993. Got him into Led Zeppelin at age 6. He now plays their music on guitar. :)
Good music existed back then. But, even now, in the alternative music world, there is some pretty phenomenal stuff being written and released. If it was popular, it would stand the test of time, too.
No-one I know listens to the stuff I do, and, it gets frustrating not being able to talk to people who are into the same stuff as yourself. Which is why I try and post links to obscure stuff whenever I can when a music thread pops up, to see if I can open people's minds a little bit. :P

2. Waterloo - ABBA
3. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
4. Most People I Know - Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs Live at Sunbury 1972 (I live walking distance from the original Pop Festival site. The concrete slabs from the toilet blocks laid in '75 are still there)

*Regarding Osmosis, you'll know the song when you hear it. It's of the hardest songs to obtain these days - totally obscure but very memorable. They were a group of South African session musos. Interesting that the song was a big hit in Australia and appeared on many of those K-Tel compilations.
Suzy, I'm not quite as a fan as you with ABBA when it comes to all the memorabilia but certainly with the music itself. Two important points: lyrics and the musical geniuses that are Benny and Bjorn, and the incredible harmonies of Agnetha and Anni-frid. That Eurovision 1974 performance is just wonderful. When you get artists like Bono and Eric Clapton publicly acknowledging their brilliance, that says something. And I'm sorry I have to say it... Agnetha...grrrrrrrrrrr ;) I think every boy at school was besotted by her.

You tiger you. I was always the Frida because of the obvious dark hair and my best friend was Anna with her loooong blonde hair. Hair brushes for mics and a big mirror were a necessity when it came to performing Abba. Have to get those side turns right you know. Yes that what's young girls did for fun. :P

Thank goodness the OP titled this thread "Your Best Five Songs From The 70's"............it's all terribly personal and subjective and there's just too damned many great songs, albums and artists...........The Band (admittedly they surfaced in the late 60's), Elton John, Poco, The Eagles as well as most of the aforementioned artists.......any number of songs from them could easily make it onto a "preference/favourite" list. Unfortunately, too many are suffering from being transfered/remastered to digital :(
stephenb
11-10-2011, 10:09 PM
You're right Chris. It's very personal and subjective, my long time opinion on music is that even though I may not necessarily like a particular genre, song or artist, I appreciate other people's tastes. I'm sure you'd share the same attitude. In fact I reckon threads about music here on IIS get some of the most replies! Music is a great topic to bring people together, whatever you're tastes!
And the OP Was really inviting trouble by asking for 5
As Marcia Hines once sang.... Music is my life... my life is music...

Very hard to define a particular group of songs from that era with so many changes in styles and what I liked/was doing at the time. I went from school to work to uni then, but I'll give it a shot though. :D
Early seventies:
Most of what Daddy Cool put out, Blackfeather, AC/DC, Slade, BBKing, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Billy Thorpe, Badfinger. Songs from Morning of the Earth.
Mid seventies:
Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, Al diAmola, Supertramp, Eagles, Steely Dan, Lindesfarn.
Late seventies:
Woo Hoo punk had arrived:rockband: Stooges, Ramones, NY Dolls, The Only Ones Pistols Clash Radiobirdman Sportz Saints and on it goes.....
Too busy to have favourites in that decade. :innocent:
Regards
Keith
Kev, I completely forgot about that class of '74 song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzgNNvtLml8&feature=related), must go you-tube it.
Marty Rhone from that show did Denim & Lace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rySDq3cWGDM) and that's one of my fav. songs. Oooh he was such a hotty too! Had to stop myself dribbling when just now seeing that video again. I think that show was on at 3.30, just in time for after school.:D
There are waaaay too many much loved songs from that era. The seventies was when music truly came alive. And hasn't that music stood the test of time even with this new generation. ;)
Does anyone remember the album "Explosive Hits '74"? See it here (http://www.oz-compilation-albums.com/70s/1974/explosivehits74/albuminfo.htm) with the track listing. :D
I have it - it's the BEST album ever!
Save Your Kisses For Me (Brotherhood of Man)

Suzy,
I have to thank you for providing those links.... I watched the first one and when it finished you tube suggested some other clips to watch, one of which was Boys, Boys, Boys by Sabrina. I'd forgotten about that song and clip!
I loved that clip as she desperately fought with her bikini top in the pool trying to maintain her dignity. And just as I remembered she failed miserably!
Once again Suzy, thank you!

I remembered the song but not the clip so I had a look and I had to pick my jaw up from the ground.
*gulp* you're welcome :ashamed::ashamed::ashamed:
Forget keeping the top on, I want to know how she keeps all that make-up on in the water.
Btw, she wasn't trying very hard to maintain her "dignity". :P
