Hi all,
Is there any such equipment out there that can mount an iphone camera into the scope eyepiece?
I cant help wonder after seeing a tv program recently interviewing a bunch of wedding photographers using an iphone4 connected to what looks like an slr camera lens which took some nice movies and photos of the wedding. I was wondering if the same can be done for basic astrophotography..

There is a good one for the iPhone, it was discussed in the forums here a week ago or so. makes a great live-view display for brighter objects as well, I'll dig out the details.

:thumbsup:Hi Craig,
In the latest (october) issue of "Australian Sky and Telescope " on page 18 in the new product showcase , is what I think , is exactly what you are looking for , :eyepop:
Its an iPhone adaptor that allows you to attach an iPhone or iPod directly to your telescope .
google
www.magnilux.com (http://www.magnilux.com)
hope this helps.

Hi Brian, thanks for that! Will look it up
Seems a good idea! Good for lazy astronomers like me.
Now to find an adapter for my HTC phone.
Thanks.

For those who receive the US Version of S&T

I have googled lots but I haven't found anything like the iphone adapter for other phone types.
I looked at some adapters that have a telescope attached. But none of these allow the case fitting to attach to an eyepiece with the telescope removed. Nor can be adapted to fit.
Any luck, Liz.

;) Hi Craig have a look at the photo in the October Australian S&T and it looks like it grips the iPhone by its body , so I think it might work on our HTC phones as well , :eyepop: yea I got one and its 5 megga pixel camera is very good , I took some shots of the sun on tuesday morning by holding the phone over a 22mm Panoptic brought here and using a Kendrick filter ,,,, also brought here .
I will try and post a few photos .
A holder would be awsome as its real hard  to hold the camera in the right position and press the shutter as well ...
Hows the new scope?
Brian.

:thumbsup:It worked ! there is a photo in the photo section taken hand held using my phone , it's ok but to have a device to hold it steady
like the magnilux item would be nice.
Brian.
Good detail on the sun. I suppose the blur is from being handheld.
Perhaps an aftermarket case for the HTC with an eyepiece (sans lens) glued with silicone may work. Probably a clip-on.
I did find a holder made by Leica but price is nearly $200! And it's actually made for mounting to an Apo-Televid spotting scope.
The Saxon Mak is pretty good, thanks.

:) Thanks Craig , yea the blur is movenent , its really hard to hold the lense steady as you push the button ? .. :question:Oh yea my HTC has no button , its on the touch screen ,, ...
That makes it even harder ,
I am working tomorrow and if I get the time I might look at some basic mount ,,
Thanks mate .

Does anyone know of an Australian stockist for the MX-1?? Seems like a good thing to me :)
I see Magnilux have SOLD OUT of the MX-1 on their website. I did a basic search of the net but didn't find Australian seller.
Looks like it can be adapted for other smartphones - drill camera peephole and may need to add padding on the brackets for smaller phones. The site says does not fit other smartphones but with the mentioned adjustments, it should fit. Magnilux also say they intend to have a cradle to hold other phones eventually.
Price is a bit rich, $45. Typical for astronomy gear but this is actually not very specialised or precision equipment - just an metal iphone holder with a ring clamp at the back.

I've managed to get this photo of the moon using my iPhone4s without the mount - took a bit to get it right! (image reduced 50% size)
The iPhone mount looks like it's owned by Onion now.. Bintel sells them for $79.95... So i might order one pretty soon as i have an idea..
Using the iPhone4s mirroring feature (airplay), you should be able to stream your viewing (live) to an AppleTV device connected to your TV.. perfect for the kids when it's too cold outside..

Mmm, nice, now we need a filter/cooling mod.

Filter/cooling? Could you please explain that mod you mentioned pls?
Saw a youtube video of this mount looking at a sun spot!
I asked Bintel whether they have one in stock, but it appears they don't have them in as yet.

Yep, that works a treat, I have that setup at home, iphone4s mirrored wirelessly to the TV via the AppleTV module in real time. They love it when the moon is up.

Thanks Poita, great to hear that setup will work fine.
Do you have the iPhone mount? how well does the iPhone pick up the detail from nebulaes and planets (esp jupiter?)

@ Craig:
Great shot you took there using your adapter! I can't believe that such a small camera that can capture shots of space so clearly!
Had a look into those SLR lenses for the iphone. They don't look really handy. Looks like it would be a bit difficult to hold the heavy lens, keep the phone steady and use a touch screen to capture the shot instead of pressing a button imo, (although I hear the latest iPhones, have an option of using a button to take a photo).

I took this moon shot via my lightbridge 12" holding the iphone into the eyepiece. I'm amazed by the quality of this little camera in the iphone4s.
Still waiting for my mount to arrive.

Hey all,
finally got my iphone mount and tried it this evening using one of my old eyepiece - im still waiting on my lightbridge free meade eyepiece 4000 set from bintel so this is the only 1.25" eyepiece i have at the moment (my other eyepiece are 2" - mount is only compatible for 1.25" lenses.)
anyway, the iphone struggle to get details from jupiter - White overexposed circle.. And then i tried the orion nebulae and it barely make out any detail..
Im wondering if filters could help out? As theres a few included in the meade set im waiting on.
