My interview by Sixty Symbols

A month ago I was interviewed for Sixty Symbols (http://www.sixtysymbols.com/)of Nottingham University. The interviewer was Brady Haran, who is a fellow South Australian out here interviewing various people for current projects and some upcoming ones.

Brady wanted to meet me at my observatory at Clayton to do the interview and the interview starts at that point. It was so much fun and I was a little more animated than I usually am in real life. As some of you would know.

Thanks Rob, never had any real problem with public speaking. Weird, some people really freeze up but there are the odd few of us that don't. For this strength there are plenty of other faults for me sort though.:)

Brady is a very good interviewer though. We talked for a while before hand and that makes things easier than just having a camera shoved in your face and told to talk.

Still reckon I have a face for radio though.;)

Very well done Paul, it's always great to get the message out there that amateurs really can make meaningful contributions to science.

It's just so important to try and keep the profile of amateur astronomy up there in the public eye in all forms of the media.

Fabulous Paul!

Comes across very impressively and I am sure there will be viewers out there
who will come away thinking, "I want to do that!".

Having recently had some visitors out from the UK, I also strongly suspect that
there were will many UK viewers somewhat envious of the fact you get such
clear skies and that "this bloke in Australia has a piece of property large
enough where he can set up his own observatory!". So it is funny how we in Australia
take this sense of space somewhat for granted, but for some who live in other parts of
the world your observatory is probably as large as their entire garden! :eyepop:

Sounds like it was one of those rare magic nights of seeing for the award winning Saturn shoot.

Funny how different observers often describe the colours they perceive of objects
in different ways. When you were asked about Saturn, you respond about
what you describe as its "yellowy-orangey colour" whereas I tend to start
by describing to people the mauve-purple cap first.

In recent weeks, just by accident whilst Googling, I came across your observatory
construction blog which is an impressive thing in itself!

Not if you know what's good for you Trev.:P :lol::lol: I had to laugh when I saw this in the final video. Good to have that there as levity makes for people taking in an interest that is otherwise quite dry.:)

Thanks Gary, I wanted the interview to be entertaining and informative. You're right we take for granted our space here. I feel cramped at home on our large suburban block and yet in other places on Earth this space would accommodate a lot more people.

Lots got left on the cutting room floor. I remember talking about a range of things that were not included in the final video but I am still happy that the message was put out there.

Paul that was not only interesting but entertaining as well. You should do more as your explanations were concise and understandable!!!!!
