Melbourne Moon Tonight

Quarter moon clearly shining over Melbourne tonight, but there is a large and clear silver ring visible around it. I remember reading somewhere that it has to do with upper atmosphere temperatures. :shrug:

Can anyone explain it further or correct me?

Occurs when moon or sunlight hits ice crystals in thin high altitude clouds.
