I'd like to get into some digital imaging but I'm not sure what the most effective way to go about it is. I've read some articles about the Meade LPI but it sounds like the Philips ToUcam is a better way to go.

I've got these prices for the bits I'd need:

PHILIPS ToUcam PRO II PCVC840K $145
1.25" Adapter $35
IR filter $60

Is this about right?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Where abouts in Adelaide are you Jonathan? I am down south, Aberfoyle Park.

Exfso,

I live in Millswood (about 2km south of the show grounds) and I work in Pooraka. (not a fun drive to do each day!)

ToUcam is the way to go..

Check out this thread (http://www.iceinspace.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=578&highlight=NexImage) started by Gordon a few weeks ago, asking the same question (well, pretty much :))

If you still have any q's let me know.

The IR filter for $60 is blue - just beware of that. I wouldn't buy it again. I returned mine and bought the $120 one (hopefully it will arrive monday).

ToUCam is great. Another vote from me.
The price you got sounds pretty right. There seem to be more and more popping up on Astromart these days. Generally not alot cheaper though. They still command top dollar even 2nd hand.
So I guess if you buy & don't like, you'll be able to off-load it easy enough
Cheers

Toucam has my vote, better resolution and control over exposure. I had the LPI but found that it was really limited in the resolution it could get.

I'm a very happy ToUcam user, and I note people are saying good things about it compared to the LPI. What about in comparison to Meade's Deep Sky Imager?

David has the LPI and he has done great shots.......I am not going to make an opinion till I see both in action.....

It sounds like I'll be buying a ToUcam this week then! Thanks for the advice everyone, and for the link Iceman it has helped a great deal. With a bit of luck I'll have some pictures worth posting in the not too distant future.
