Which eye do you observe with?

I voted RH left eye only because of astigmatism in the right eye.
I actually keep going to the right eye but have to remember to use the left.
Didn't know that I had astigmatism until a check . It only prevails when using low low power eyepieces.
My near and far sightedness is moderatly OK . It's actually the astigmatisim that is the problem.
When I got a new low power eyepiece a couple of years back I thought it was faulty with spikes coming from all angles , until I changed to the left eye and bugger me , they disappeared.

Funny this as a few newbies that have looked through my scopes in the past and don't wear glasses normally , have since found that they have astigmatism in either or both eyes from an observation session and then an eye check.
I wonder sometimes when you read EP and scope tests and reviews about aberrations seen in the view as to weather the reviewer has ever had an eye test done of late.

that one vote was me :P honestly, it's been so long since I've looked through an eyepiece (that was attached to a scope before all you buggers jump in!) that I simply cannot remember which eye I use. But I'm sure I just use whichever eye is working at the time, yeah my eyesight is going too.

Interesting results so far. 8 vs 8 for left and right eye.

I was curious if there was a correlation between handedness and eyedness ;)

Even though I have a bigger floater in my right eye I still favour it (right handed too). Just cant seem to get the same detail through the left - it takes much more concentration, too much like hard work.

I can momentarily move the floater slightly by moving my eye rapidly, but it always shifts back just above my fovea.

years ago when I did surveying in the army, I was trained to use my left eye if I was right handed. Apparently it has something to do with being left brained if your right handed. I don't know if this is true, but I have always viewed left eyed since then, even though I am right handed.

The optic nerves within each eye meet in the front part of the head at a point called the optic chiasm, which functions like a cloverleaf on a highway. All the fibers from the left half of each retina turn towards the right side of the brain, and the fibers from the right half of each retina turn towards the left side of the brain. The end result of this crossing is that the left half of the brain looks at the right visual world, and the right half of the brain looks at the left visual world.

Apparently so. All reviews without exception mention increased detail when using two eyes.

I'm right handed but look through the eyepiece with the left eye. I asked an optometrist about it a few weeks ago and she said it was just my dominant eye.

What's strange is that having a dominant eye (if the above anatomy information is correct) means the dominance is introduced before the optic chiasm rather than in the processing centres in one half of the brain. i.e. in the optic nerves (or perhaps the chiasm itself). As the processing centres in each half of the brain get information from both eyes.

This would explain the perceived advantage of a binoviewer, because when using a single eye, each half of the brain only receives half the information from the single retina in use.

With limited interconnections between the hemispheres of the brain this is a distinct disadvantage (unless you happen to be of the fairer sex - whom apparently have a greater number of interconnections).

EDIT: after having a bit more of a think about this - eye dominance could still be attributable to the processing centres in the brain, but it would require right eye dominance (for example) in both hemispheres of the brain. This seems less likely but possible. A Google search only showed that this is still not well understood.

Designing an experiment to test which of these theories is more probable is quite simple - all it would take would be a study of individuals with damage to the nerves after the chiasm. A very rare condition.

Right hand, right eye.
I do use both eyes when I use the finder (straight through), as this gives me a finder image ontop of the natural image, sorta like a Telrad.
Bino viewer as well, with lunar and solar almost exclusively bino. The floaters are not as noticeable, if at all with the bino.

I'm R+R. I've tried with my left, but I just can't bring it to focus as easily.. like vermin said, it's more hard work. I'm sure it just requires training to strenghten the nerves that focus the left eye..

Problem is last night I tried using my right eye for a change and found I can see better with it (with glasses on). Damn uncomfortable for me though. Not used to it.

Going to get my eyes checked, as I think I need new glasses. haven't had a check up for years.

Well, I'm right handed but left eyed, since I caught a cricket ball with my left eye at age 18 (a long time ago believe me). At 36 I had an interocular implant which makes it possible to use my right eye, but I get internal reflections in the eye instead of the scope, so I stick to the left, which has its own share of problems (yes, that sentence is now long enough) . This could be why I now prefer imaging to visual observing.


Come to think of it, I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous :D .

Right handed, right eye for viewing, right foot for kicking the footy and operate the mouse with the right hand. I don't know how you can do the mouse in your left hand Dave if your right handed, i tried it and couldn't control the mouse.

Mostly my right eye, I'm also right handed. I try to use an eyepatch over the unused eye and swap to the left eye occasionally. My vision in the right eye (slight astigmatism) is not as good as the left, but I don't notice much difference.

Well I too am right handed and observe with my right eye,I have a touch of astigmatism in It but I can't for the life of me get use to observing with my left !
I have noticed that using Naglers It virtaully disappears !

Unfortunately I have a lot of astigmatism in this eye. Viewing with specs on isn't much fun, so I guess what I should do is train myself to use my right eye.
Can anyone reccomend a comfortable EP for wearers of specs?
