Ok, literally 45 secs ago, approx 22:02 AEST, I just observed a large bright orange ball moving slowly low on the eastern horizon. I quickly grabbed my binoculars, but by the time I foucsed on it, it faded. The whole event lasted approx 20 secs.
The rough trajectory of the object is from about 20 degrees above horizon, it appeared as if it was falling from east to south east.
Anyone know what it might be?
Too late for the UARS surely :confused2:
cheers, Bo

Fireballs, when they occur, can move through virtually any part of the sky and in any direction, and they can appear to move "slowly".

Furthermore, they can have a variety of interesting colors.

The human perception of slowness or speed is hard to measure accurately, and especially so when a person is confronted with an unexpected and spectacular event.

cheers, Robert

True (on all three counts) :)
I had a very satisfying night of backyard obs, and literally saw the fire ball as I was packing up my stuff to move indoors. Still, fairly spectacular and I was previleged enough to witness it.
