Lawn bowls. Took it up about 2 months ago. Very relaxing and it's not as easy at it looks.
Most clubs have a set or 2 of bowls so you can give it a go without cost. I did it this way and ended up buying a set of bowls.
And you get to meet a lot of interesting people.

Hi Tony,

Take up a language.

I have been studying French for about 18 months, and in that time have spent almost a month in France, and read about 10 French novels. It has opened up all sorts of new and interesting ideas and experiences for me, I have met lots of interesting people, and have made some memories which will stay with me forever.

This is me in the Loire Valley, in front of Chambord. Bloody amazing!

I've always wanted learn German or Spanish. English is already my second language... I might move up from bi-lingual to tri-lingual! hmmm you might be on to something here. Cheers! :)

Hi Tony :hi:

Well, what other things do you like? Are you looking for something to 'do' or something you can throw yourself into.

There are so many things i could suggest, but i don't know much about you so don't know where to start.

I'm guessing you've played Minecraft :confuse3::rofl:

we could just keep you posting on here?

what subjects do you enjoy at school? any ideas what you may want to do when you leave? I'm just thinking that if for example you like English. what about reading, or even trying your hand at writing. If you enjoy Maths, and you like games, what about programming? how about learning to play guitar?

i guess it depends too on what you want to get out of your new hobby...

that_guy
21-09-2011, 11:22 PM
hmm... i never did get music, both listening and playing :P i did write a fair bit, but its become more of a chore than a hobby. i know im being really difficult right now aha but i dont want to make the mistake of taking up a hobby to drop it again after a week or so :P as for the subjects i like at school... i do enjoy IPT which is basically computers :P we're learning visual basics so maybe programming isnt such a bad idea haha...

Bird watching. Australia is one of the best birdwatching places in the world, what with all the colourful parrots and other birds you have there.

Tony, the best advice I could give with the limited info available, is 'Get fit!'

You are young, now is the best time. If you don't get fit now, it will only get harder and harder as time goes by.

Being fit allows you to do much more in life, gives you more options, more opportunities, and gives your brain more 'go'. It gives you confidence, so you'll have much more luck with the ladies (or blokes if you're that way inclined - as Seinfeld says, "Not that there's anything wrong with that"). It could save your life soon, it could save it later, or it could just allow your life to be longer. I was never very fit as a youngster, then in my late 20's to early 30's I worked hard at it and got very fit. I'm bloody lucky I did too, because when I was 34 I had a very serious accident, and if I wasn't as fit as I was, I would not have made it. My life since recovering has been wonderful, I'm so glad I'm still here.

Seriously, being fit you will get much more out of life. (And you won't be such a burden on the health system as you get older!)

Geez, I sound like some sort of preacher! I don't usually go around saying all this stuff!

Cheers,
Jason.

Take up a musical instrument....guitar, mandolin, piano, drums, bagpipes, violin...try anything:):)

Trace your family tree....now, genealogy, that's something that will keep you going for a long time. Trust me:)

Build a model railway, build and fly radio controlled planes or make plastic models. Like computers....build and repair them. Learn how to cut and polish gemstones. Build and fly model rockets.

Plenty of hobbies to get into:):)

Get political.
Parade down your street wearing naught but a protest sign.
Get inventive.
Turn your vacuum into a musical instrument.
Get badass.
Buy a skateboard. Better yet, steal one.
Go mad.
Collect various 'hairs' and file them in zippy bags.

Or as my mother used to say, "There's plenty of house-work to be done."

Oh but really, this is a fun site.

I recently made an acoustic speaker for the Iphone out of duct tape and an A4 binder.

Hi Tony, you could try beekeeping if you have a backyard.

It's a fascinating pastime and you get free honey as well, you'll probably get enough to sell as well.

Hi Adrian
Might i suggest Ham Radio, its a fun hobby you get to meet people from around the world and talk to them and you can spend as much or as little to achive these results, but in saying that that when you walk outside at night you will still look up and say i might just get a small camera to play with every now and then

cheers

Tony, do you like Wood or Metalwork?

Either or both of these pursuits will usually become useful in a lot of interesting hobbies you may take on in the future.

Basic metal machining (lathe and mill) can be learned through clubs, books and friends.

How about amateur astronomy... great hobby!
But seriously Tony I think I know where you are at. As a young fella after about 5 years into the hobby I digressed into playing guitar, joining a band, playing gigs, a record and no interest in astronomy (or so I thought). Then in my mid twenties I "rediscovered" amateur astronomy by chance walking into a small book store in Hobart and buying a Patrick Moore book called The Observers Guide to Astronomy - basic but that's all that was needed. By then I was married with kids on the way and amateur astronomy was reawakened in a really big way. Amateur astronomy was just laying dormant waiting for that spark. Haven't looked back since. It happens to many.
I'm sure you will find something that will fill this period. You are a bright young man and your employment future is what is becoming important, make wise decisions in that regard and we will be reading about the RC Optics / Planewave super dooper system you have in years to come from all those $$$

Had a similar problem and got me a 3 string cigar box slide guitar:D...

lots of folk are into it and anyone can play one:eyepop:.

Check utube and you will get the idea.

Thru a big amp it peels the paint off the walls:thumbsup:. Since I have had it a lot of folk even ask me to play it:eyepop::D ..that never happened with a conventional guitar:sadeyes:..the reverse really;).

There is the playing side but also the building.

Hi Tony, sounds like you need to follow your inner geek :). Some suggestions:
1. Model airplanes/cars.
2. Photography (buy an old SLR and go wild, gets you outdoors, even for a littlewhile, that sunshine will do you good).
3. Fishing, I know its lame, but as someone said to me when I was 16 "it's the best excuse of spending a whole day doing nothing"

On a more serious note, what do your mates get up to during the holidays? There must be some like minded people you know of that has an attention span longer than an iPhone app . 16 is a difficult age, old enough to do things on your own, not old enough to be considered an "adult".

A final note, have you thought of doing some voulnteering work? It might be as simple as visiting people in nursing homes etc. You will be amazed at how much your visit might mean to the residents and how much you might actually learn from those "old timers" .

"Smoke me a Kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!" << has been driving me nuts. is this from Red Dwarf? :confuse3:

for something a bit different, you should check out the Might Boosh :P

Have you thought about creating a program for astronomy. you've got the knowledge :D

another idea was, if you like computers and visual design, maybe explore that area and find out where that could take you.

any interest in making short films? hmm, i guess that would involve writing...

what about photography... you've got the equipment.

are you artistic?

ok, what about, if you give us 5 words (relating to things you enjoy/are interested in) and maybe that will give us more ideas....

Strange you should ask!! After years of procrastination and false starts, just last night I found my first variable stars. It was pretty easy really, especially as I used GOTO. I looked for three targets and located two, the other one I just couldn't get the field to match the chart. I didn't actually do a mag estimate but one was about mag 7 and the other mag 10.5-11. The weather looks good so I'm hoping that the first actual brightness estimate will be tonight. If I can just do 1-2 per night to start with I can work my way up to doing dozens - he says hopefully. :D

Google AAVSO or Variable Star South.

Well you could try all of my old hobbies... motorcycles, drinking, smoking, staying out late and chasing members of the opposite sex.

Or you could save yourself a lot of pain and embarrassing situations and try to find things that are both fun and good for you.

it sounds like you are young, reasonably smart and financially ok and that is a very privileged position to be in. be a pity if you waste it following my teen years.

Tony,

Bo's suggestion was a great one!! I'm on the board of an organisation in Melbourne called Eastern Volunteers. They're always looking for new folks to help out, and there is a huuuge variety of volunteers who work with us - from people who drive older folks to medical appointments, volunteer at nursing homes and help out with sporting games for people with disabilities, to graphic designers, marketing folks, web designers, IT folks and even a young dude who has some experience organising music festivals who helps organise our Multicultural Spring Festival. Sure, there are lots of older people who volunteer, but there are also heaps of us young'ns as well. If it's up your alley, you sound like a smart guy, you might even volunteer to be on a board of management too? You just need to be a bit enthusiastic and willing to read management and financial reports - but you'd pick it up in no time, I'm sure!! Most organisations would be thrilled to have some fresh blood... If memory serves, there's an organisation called Volunteering Gold Coast who'd probably love to hear from you! If I can give you any other ideas, you're welcome to PM me :)

Get a large aquarium! :D

Nice indoor hobby- you can use your creative side in landscaping and planting out the tank, read lots on biology for maintaining the system, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy watching your hobby (so relaxing!) and depending on how large the tank is, can even keep you a bit fit with all those buckets of water change water you have to carry and dump.:P
And, if you get livebearers, there easy to breed and so much fun to watch baby fish. :D
When the weather is no good for astronomy, I go and play with my fish tank indoors, as there's always something to do in it (plant pruning, glass cleaning etc.) Also brings a lot of joy seeing the fish when they are happy and playful and breeding lots.

Also Mel hit the nail on the head with those short films seeing as you write stories. :D You could be a big youtube star :eyepop:.

And if you decide to get fit, just remember if you put too many big muscles on you with being around 6ft odd tall, yer might scare me next time I see you.:P I think it's a great idea- go join a gym and also meet some girls while you're there (two hobbies in one  ).

And by the way.. I would have thought chasing girls is a hobby in itself at your age., You're good looking, go get them tiger grrrrr.

has anybody mentioned grinding your own optics? mirrors, eyepieces, objectives?
absolutely fascinating stuff! keeps the intelect sharp, and with all the grinding a little exercise too!
with technology the way it is there must be some great computer programmes available for any optical surface imaginable
i was reading recently how the optical designers choose their optical glasses to reduce all aberations inherent in all index and how they bring them together through mutual annhialation of said glasses
i have quite an old book on optical design by wilman bell(?) (i think) though this may be the producer
anyhow that is what i would most like to do in the world and it would be relatively inexpensive

Tony,
With all those great waterways all around you on the coast there,How about Kayaking!!
Summer is coming and lots of warm weather. You can tow the kayak behind your bike with a wheel set to get to the water if you are close or put it on a car..Getting out on the water is great for fitness,Very relaxing, quiet as well. Most kayaks these days are quite stable so you dont have to get too wet if you don't want to.some of the plastic ones are a bit heavy or you could get a mirage 580, kevlar and glass, which is the one I have, and only about 20 kilo and pick it up easily.
Just a thought!!

Cycling is great. I've ridden as a hobby but more so as a lifestyle. I truely think kids these days miss out on a lot by not riding the way we used to; fitness of course but also judgment, self-confidence and coordination. I rode to school from about 8 until walking with the girls became more interesting at about 16-17. I also rode to work and did most of commuting by bike until a few years ago. Even now I should get a bike and ride again. Good choice!!

hit by cars twice nothing serious fortunately
