Sorry for all the threads - the learning curve for me has been steep (perhaps biting off too much to start with).

I have a 10" Newt that does not seem to want to focus with the camera in the eyepiece holder (can't get close enough). I have since removed the eyepiece holder, purchased longer screws, and attached it directly in to the focusing tube and it works. Is there anything wrong with doing it this way?

Will I face any future problems down the track when using accessories (powermates or equivalent to allow greater zoom).

There are some focusers available that are 'low profile' which allows sufficient in movement to focus a DSLR - the other way is to either move the mirror up the tube a little or to put a x2 barlow into the focuser before the DSLR.
I think moving the mirror might be the long term way to go.
If you know the distance from the camera sensor now to the sensor with the focuser in place, moving the mirror up that much would give you just enough to focus the camera, if you add a few mil then you'll be able to assure yourself that other cameras will also fit - conversely how much travel have you got on your collimation screws????? Will that move the mirror up without extra drill holes??
