I have been observing with binos but have never recorded what I saw or didn't
Your project has inspired me. I am going to start keeping a record..but I am going with my 10x 30 IS...wonder how many I will see?

A 30mm objective is a little small (although you could say that about my 42mm objective) but you've got IS on your binos which will help you loads.

Yes its meant to add a magnitude, at least; I also have 7x 50s (more than one actually), 11x60s and 20 x 80s so I guess you could say I like binos;
but I really like these Canon IS and find them incredibly handy to use and take with me when I travel.

also I always keep in mind Phil Harrington's report of having observed the horsehead(!) with 10 or 12 x 30s -not IS either!- who knows what is possible on a clear dark night

of course I personally have not been able to see the HH in 24 inch dob with a h beta filter, so I dont think I am going to be setting any records visually-but it is fun to try:)
