Comet Elenin

Hello Even with a 15.2 percent Waxing Cresent -I imaged Comet Elenin at about 6.58pm tonight-The Image is far from Perfect but you can easily see the Comet-200x800 F4 Reflectoer-canon 350D 95 seconds Exposure-ISO-800.

Nice job Tony! :thumbsup: It's in quite a difficult position to image. You should forward the image to Spaceweather - because of the interest in this comet and its recent rapid changes, a couple of days ago they were calling for readers with pertinent images to submit them. The comet is not currently visible from the NHem, and there are not a lot of images around.

Just go to the Spaceweather page and click the 'Submit Your Images' link (scroll down, on the right).

Yes it is breaking up and by the end of October there is a chance Elenin will not be visible.

it is strange that it is assumed to be disintegrating because it is apparently losing brightness and elongating...yet it is too close to the ecliptic to see it with a strong enough scope to see the nucleus. thought we weren't sure exactly how these long period comets act?

pictures from amateur astronomers show enough evidence that the comet has broken up and in the next 4 weeks those pieces will break down into smaller pieces.
