NGC 6872 & companions

Hi all,
this is quite a nice area of sky and I haven't imaged this since 2004.
had one of the best nights in a long time seeing wise when taking the colour. Lots of faint galaxies lingering in the back ground.

It is a bit of a mile stone for me as, I'm now able to get good long consistent sub exposures thanks to my new SX OAG.
Days of 4min max are finished with so there are a lot of fainter objects I won't have to pass up.

As with all things, there's pros and cons... all my subs line up so well, I now have to dither my guiding :rolleyes:

That's a cool field Rich, deep alright. Loads of faint ones too but the center of the field with those two interacting ones is real nice. Top result at that FL for sure. :thumbsup:

Cheers Louie! Yeah, it's one I took eons ago and never really thought it great at the drain pipe image size I was getting. So pretty much left it till now.

Yes, starting to reveal a little detail to the elongated spiral.
A good galaxy cluster this one.
Love to see it with something like Greg B's 17"er..
I saw an image the Sydney Girls High School took of it with the Gemini scope.... :sadeyes:... Lucky lassies is all I can say!

Yes it is a very interesting spiral this one. And the field is quite busy.

Still sorting a few little issues.... like the pick off prism causing an extra spike to bright stars to the right of the field... still, I guess I can live with this as any further out I begin to loose light and the advantage of the corrected field for guide stars.

I find the OAG has been money well spent Mike.... considering it just replaces the extension tube I had in front of the filter wheel, it was really pretty painless and does work well.

Your setup seems to be going great guns for you?? At least you can get out to 7+ mins... without any drama??
I guess if you plan for doing a fair bit of NB stuff, consistently doing subs out passed 10min, then it might be something worth investing in.

This one I think needs a bit more aperture to what I have.
But it was interesting to see the extent of the group, as in the past my field was some what narrow.

It is a pretty small sort of object for what folks are imaging with these days. Suppose it gets over looked for this reason.

But it's good to see some large apertures coming back into the line up.
I think your 12" will do a grand job of this object with a good size chip and do justice to the out lying galaxies scattered about as well.

It is really our galaxy time while we wait for Orion to come around to better viewing time....
Some really nice galaxy fields around at the mo.
Not being a great fan of elliptical galaxy clusters, I think the Ngc6872 spiral with its elongated arm disturbance gives this area just something special to look at.
