I have just transferred over to Bigpond from my previous provider and notice I am only getting about half my download speeds. I used to get around 650-750KB/s now I am lucky if I get 400KB/s. I am still operating off the same exchange. Had a tech here today and he had issues with dirty lines in our street, said that was fixed, checked my Modem and found it to be a tad suspect, and replaced that. Speed went up to 550KB/s while he was here, now it is back down to a ridiculous 350KB/s. Depending on what download test mirror I use I get as low as 125KB/s.
My distance from the exchange is around 3km. The tech said they were getting nearly max speed at the exchange, so no issues there. It is now nearly midnight here, so cant be too many people on line using bandwidth.

We've been having the same trouble here where I am...Since I've been here really! We ended up mentioning the dreaded 'O' word to them recently (the Ombudsman) over a few issues, & it was like someone threw a magic switch & it suddenly got better...Funny about that..;)

Yeah, invoke the O word. I've had nothing but trouble with Bigpond, I ended up switching without penalty (only after the Ombudsman) to iinet and have had no trouble since, and actually get *faster* than advertised speeds, and a support person that is in Australia every time. Excellent service.
Swap modems with someone who is getting good speeds if you can to test it. Try a new ADSL filter if you can, and double check that everything else in the house is filtered i.e. that nothing else sharing the line is doing so unfiltered.
What does the modem diagnostic say for your SNR and line speeds? can you post your modem setrtings?

I've been on a Bigpond ADSL2+ plan for about 6 months after switching from People Telecom. Just checked my speed and got 862KB/s or 6.9Mbps which about normal for me. I'm about 3 kms from exchange.
Would love to get 20Mbps .....
The upgrade from a ADSL to ADSL2+ has given me about a 5 times average speed increase.

All I can say is bring on the fibre optic network and then you will get your top speed as nothing is faster than light especially copper:thumbsup:

I'm 3.5km and get about 14mbit, only ever got about 6mbit with telstra
ADSL never worked properly here - the copper phone lines are in a really poor state. Switched over to cable and never looked back.:)

Hi Peter, I'm 5km from the exchange and I get around 450KB/s. If you got 650-750KB/s prior there is no reason you shouldn't get that back at least. You need to escalate the situation. They'll send another level tech and sort it out for you. Just be persistent. That's how it works with Telstra. But they'll do the job in the end.

I had bigpond ADSL for a few years and had the speed limited to 1500 Kb. - about 128KB/s down loads.
About a week before they advised me of the availability of ADSL2 my ADSL downloads suddenly became 400+KB/s (They must have removed the speed limiter)
When they advised that ADSL2 was available I got a new modem and switched to ADSL2. The downloads jumped up to 650KB/s (max.). My uploads also improved to 100+ KB/s.
I also have a bigpond next G and have had a maximum download of around 500KB/s but speed on wireless depends on available bandwidth.

I am all over them like a bad smell. Not going to let them get the better of this one. Some bloke this morning who I could hardly understand, (so what else is new) tried to tell me this is all I can expect. I promptly told him I wanted it escalated yet again or I would be going a lot higher than his pay grade. All of a sudden I have another new case file #. They are going to hate me, but that is the way it goes. If I was getting 750KB/s before it moved to big pong, I should still get it as nothing has changed except the provider.:screwy:

Peter, I changed over from the supplied Thompson modem to my Netcom NB6 last night and this made no difference to the speeds. I was using the Netcom with my previous provider.

Barry I agree with you, it looks like my line speed is being throttled, definitely some sort of speed limiting going on, I am barely getting ADSL1 speeds

ADSL2 or 2+ is not supported out here Pete, so it's ADSL.
